i've only gotten the big buzz a few times, once from a fuente grande reserva and once from a padron. i personally enjoy it, but aside from the first time (my first tobacco high ever, and early in my cigar smokin days) i've never felt the urge to hurl or whatever. different people react differently

I have probably smoked a couple thousand cigars in the last several years, and yeah, I have had 2-3 occassions where I felt like absolute crap. It happens to the best of us, and doesn't make you any less "manly" if it happens to you.
Well said my friend. Lest he be so lucky after having said thus he be striken with a monster cigar that lays waste to his intestinal tract and his head inside a porcelain throne. All it takes is one to reign in that "I don't get sick on a cigar" braggadocio quip. I too, have smoked quite a few over 40 years and have had a few that sent me to my sick bed but I would never ever say that there wasn't one out there that would kick my keister around the block.

Re: Does anyone else find it a little funny...

I got a little nauseated a couple of nights ago after smoking a CAO Black. I believe that it had more to do with the flavor of the cigar than anything else. This is the second one I've smoked and I had the same reaction both times (and I've smoked some pretty stout sticks).

I got dizzy the first time I smoked a Padron. Now I quite like them. There are some sticks I'm just as glad I didn't try when I was new to cigars.

I don't smoke as often as some of you here, but I'd say I get it about once for every 15 smokes. Get it once, and it's unmistakeable.

it's a very real thing, I assure you. I find though, with experience, I can feel the early signs of it coming on, and slow down, and maybe get something sweet in my system to balance it out.

I have been smoking cigars (never cigs) for about 2 years and have NEVER felt sick or overwhelmed by the power of a cigar. I do not inhale, but both me and the lady are always laughing at reviews that talk of vomiting, laying on a cold floor after a cigar, calling 911, loss of balance, dizziness, cold sweats, diarhea, palpitations, sleepless nights, feelings of paranoia, or halucinations that some speak of when describing certain cigars. Our favorite is reviews that take a sort of warning tone, warning "noobs" about the intensity of a particular smoke: "This one is strong, be warned...If you smoke this cigar, you will leave yourself open to rectal abuse by the neighborhood as you lay in a pool of your own vomit and urine on your porch for days....so smoke slow and spit....oh and eat lots of sugar and by no means smoke on an empty stomach?" A coke? a full meal?....to smoke a cigar? is this real or people just bein dramatic? Perhaps an undelying medical condition?

I can honestly say I have never even felt a buzz from a cigar, maybe a little fuzzy, but sickness? heart rate issues? sleep deprivation? seeing the holy ghost? pleaase. I always laugh at RP's warnings "for experienced smokers" on the Edge boxes, i have had many nights where I have gone Oliva V, Ashton VSG, and LFD Chisel back to back to back, and while I didn't feel ready for the Boston marathon, I didn't soil my pants and convulse on the floor. 2-3 Opus X in a night, no problem except on the wallet. I know many a female smoker that prefer the LFD Chisel to any other smoke, and they can even drive home after suckin on it. This is not a macho post, as I am well aware of karma, but I have always wondered what gives? Other than the complete pussification of America, why are so many grown men fighting evidently for their faculties, or even lives, after a robust cigar and couple of espressos? You aren't dying, and there is no need to vomit, your grandfather didn't. Of course I will now vomit from the next Davidoff I smoke.
I also get amused at some of these, and wonder if they are really that sensitive why do they bother.

Re: Does anyone else find it a little funny...

Nicotine is a strange beast. I've been smoking Camel light for the better part of 21 years now. I still haven't kicked that habit, probably 1/2 pack to a pack a day. sometimes more. I've got a pretty good tolerance to the effects of nicotine. I can't remember the last time I got a cigarette buzz.

With that said, there have been a few cigars in my experience that leave me with some cold sweats or a slight buzz. It's uncomfortable but never sets my world a spinning. I don't enjoy the cold sweats, but it happens on a rare occasion.

If someone touts a smoke as a butt kicker or will leave you face down in a gutter, it may be exaggerated, but still it's a fair warning. If I smoke something that makes me uncomfortable, i.e. takes away from the smoking pleasure, then I'm going to give someone else that fair warning if I'm going to recommend that smoke.

By spitting, you are not ingesting as much nicotine.

A) Grandpa probably smoked h. upmanns and macanudos. Milder cigars were vastly preferred in generations past. And I seem to recall plenty of characters in the really old post-WWI to post-WWII era cartoons turning green after puffing on a cigar in an attempt to look "tough", so it's not as if nicotine didn't kick people's asses back then.

B) I have had one experience where I can assure you, I had to vomit. It's not as if I wanted to dramatize the situation or demonstrate my frilly and delicate constitution, it was a very strong (and unpleasant) physical reaction to the nicotine, and it was the result of a cigar I didn't even consider particularly strong.

By any chance, do you (or your tough lady friends) consume other forms of tobacco/nicotine?

Here is a sure fire way to get a nic buzz. take a few good puffs, then take a mouthful of smoke and hold it while you do 10 or 20 push-ups.

All, of course, awhile back in high school, but still.

I don't personally think that it's a manliness thing, it's more in relationship to how well you've built your nicotine tolerance up.

Kind of like another plant that was smoked back in my high school days- First timers might be feeling crazy off of what the "vet"s thought to be weak-sh/*t.

I'm with you. I don't spit. But I've seen enough posts around here to know that many do.

You must be fairly young. If my Grandpa smoked H. Upmanns, they were from Havana. Most of the pre early sixties cigar smokers were smoking Havanas, as they were called then, or clear Havanas. Mancanudo didn't come out until the early seventies to satisfy the ultra mild tastes of a new generation that started smoking without Havanas.
