One has to wonder...

I was browsing the Famous close-outs page, and two pressing questions immediately leap to mind:

Backwoods Grape have been discontinued. I realize they didn't invent the grape cigar, but what kind of mental disorder ever made anyone think that was a good idea? It doesn't even sound good.

Another close-out is the... Cojones?? Seriously? Is that some twisted joke by the manufacturer on us Gringos, or some kind of weird Central American 'Truth in advertising' law being enforced? I know, Americans are notorious for being some of the least multi-lingual people anywhere, but even if you only know one single word of Spanish, you probably know what cojones are. Right? "Hey, Bob, what-cha smokin'?" "Not sure, but it tastes like Cojones!" Not only that, but even on close-out they're $198-235 for a box of 40.

I never cease to be amazed.

That's excellent. Simply excellent. I would smoke one Cajones just to be able to say that I had.

Perhaps the name means you have to have big Cajones to smoke these cigars and put up with the ridicule that will follow.

And regarding the grape Backwoods...my first thought was "robitussin". The only thing I like about Backwoods, and the one and only thing, is that the sweets smell good when my roommate smokes them.

Cheers!

Re: One has to wonder...

hahahah, that's funny....the cajones cigar...I know what it's slang for...and they probably should have chosen a better name for a cigar if they wanted to expand their target beyond only those with some balls (enough to work up the courage to smoke it)...but I just looked it up on wikipedia...which didn't really make it any better of a name for me.

Quote:
Cojones: The word has entered popular use in the United States as a slang term meaning to have a brazenly brave attitude. It is used in a way similar to chutzpah or sisu. Anglicized/Americanized pronunciations include IPA: /kəˈhoʊneɪz/ or the less accurate /kəˈhuːnəz/. A very frequent misspelling (sometimes done deliberately as a euphemism) is cajones, which actually means "drawers" (the piece of furniture) or "wooden box drums" (see cajón) in Spanish.
Maybe it's a "drum" cigar....is it short & squat...maybe like a Nub?

Actually, the Cajones is a pretty good cigar. The cigar was created for Humberto who now works at Famous. He chimes in here from time to time. Maybe, he'll pop up.

Pete Johnson has taken full advantage of this moniker with his Cojonu line with the brown label.

Cojonu -cuban slang ..to be ballsy...to have big balls..crazy willing to do anything
yo soy tremendo cojonu...

Ehh. I don't see the big deal with the name. I'd still try one.

Re: One has to wonder...

What can I say? I came up with the 'Cojones' cigar concept about 2 years ago. When I designed the band, I tagged the line "Smoke 'em if you got 'em" right under the name. It was a whimsical approach at selling cigars and I did rather well with the brand while selling it on the road. This is a full-bodied cigar with lots of flavor.

The concept came about because of exactly what PerpetualNoob pointed out. 'Cojones' is the most recognized Spanish word in the Engllish language. Being of limited means, I didn't need to spend millions to have 'Macanudo' or 'Partagas' roll off the toungue naturally. It was just there. FWIW, I don't actively sell the cigar anymore because I have a paying job now. So I begrudgingly started closing it out one cigar at a time.

It's just a name, guys. I understood the implications so I went ahead and put the band at the foot of the cigar to be ripped off and pitched, making it an anonymous pleasure.

To be fair, Tatuaje also has the Cojonu (approximately "ball buster" in english) which is very popular.

True. We introduced our cigars around the same time. But he's got star power. I'm just a nobody in this business.

Thanks for the encouragement. I suppose I serve a purpose but I'll never be a cigar maker. I can still dream, though.

You can clip 'em, or you can punch 'em, but the really interesting stuff doesn't happen until you light them on fire.
