SCHIP panic buying excuse!!

Anyone else used the SCHIP threat as a rationale to panic buy and overstock the humidor??? I did a $380 order with CI last week and now I'm tempted to do another. BUT I do have to add I have not ordered anything in about 5 months.

The new top 25 came out in the current Cigar Aficianado and the list tempts me to try a few I've not smoked before.

C'Mon....soomebody tell me it's OK!!

Jim,
How much of an effect do you think SCHIP will have on us here in Georgia?
Also, do you have any Joya De Nic Antano 1970 in stock? If you do, I will come pay you a visit tomorrow.

Last I heard, everyone in the country can expect up to a 40 cent increase per stick.

It's funny every time there is a need for a tax increase, or more money for our children, they tax tobacco products. Then out of the same mouth, these politicians ban smoking wherever they can. If American's stopped using tobacco products, where would the tax money come from then? It seems a little hypercritical to me..........

And don't forget they also subsidize tobacco farming! We're in for some tough(er) times, fellow BOTLs!

And yes, indeed, I am stocking up as best I can afford at this time!

What I don't understand is: How can you fund something that is gong to be very expensive, on an industry that is declining more and more everytime time more taxes are levied upon it? It just don't make sense to me.

It would seem to me that there are more people who drink than there are smokers, so why not fund it from alcohol taxes? That way Senator Kennedy would pay for most of it.

Re: SCHIP panic buying excuse!!

The current SCHIP legislation has a 40-cent cap per cigar. Some will be taxed at less than that. Of course, it will depend to some degree on how whoesalers and dealers figure in the tax, since the tax for the vast majority of cigars (those not made in the U.S.) will basically be assessed when they come in. So if the 40 cents just gets wrapped into the wholesale price and the retailer then figures his markup from there the effect could be considerably higher than 40 cents per stick -- perhaps as much as double, or 80 cents. Of course, only 40 cents of that would be going for the tax. The rest would be part of the retailer's margin.
And the federal government ended the tobacco subsidy program with a quota buyout in 2004.

Re: SCHIP panic buying excuse!!

I plan on placing about a 500 dollar order in the next couple of days. I'll be stocking up on Padilla Hybrids, La Gloria Cubana Glorias, and La Aurora Cameroon. I figure I have the money now, so I'd rather spend it now than have to spend later and part of the increase just go to another government program.

I've spent a bunch of money to stock up. In all honesty there are not enough words to describe the level of hypocrisy with this tax. And as far as the alcohol tax being conspicuously absent, I've wondered about the same thing. You always hear about Big Tobacco, but where's the Big Wine or Big Beer tax??? Last I heard there are lot of health issues associated with alcohol use. Our founding fathers are surely rolling in their graves over this kind of tax. Remember the Boston Tea Party?? Do they teach that anymore?

Instead of Big Wine and Big Beer, the politicians who are detached from real Americans, went after Big Oil and Big Pharma. It is funny to me that before most of these politicians head off to Washington they are middle class citizens, then after a few years they leave Washington as multi millionaire. You someone please explain how that happens?

Politicians are in it for power and control. The money is a given; they make connections and they get the bucks. The real motivation is the power and the control. You can almost hear it every time one of them talks," If you just do what I tell you everything will be fine."
