Our problem is that we're too interested in finding an island instead of returning to our "Tea Party" roots and overthrowing the bums who are legislating like this.

Here in LA, it's illegal to smoke on the beach, too. I'd support draconian legislation to regulate littering the beach but why not outlaw grilling outdoors or driving a diesel if we're going to outlaw stink?

Well... if it has no liberals, there's a chance that cigar smokers will be allowed on the island.

Really? Island full of liberals doesn't sound so bad. If I had to live on an island with crazies like you i'd probably myself.

The Federal government should get out of education entirely. and labor. and energy. and commerce. and stick to what they were entrusted to do, negotitate treaties with foreign powers and provide for a national defense. The Fed in education is simply a waste of $$. States and local handle everything already. The Fed, well I am not sure what they are doing with an Education Department except waste money.

He said "the government" which implies the local, state and federal government. In fact he was commenting on the sate government in the post originaly quoted.

Gee... there was NO education department in the USA until... But I guess we couldn't make progress.

First step... eliminate tenure.

Second step: fire any teacher whose politics are identifiable by their behavior or speech in the classroom.

Second step... eliminate courses that aren't basic reading, writing, math, history and science. No discussion of history or politics less than 20 years old unless the course is called "current events" and the syllabus a balance of center-left and center-right sources. Let the parents teach the extremes at home.

This pretty much describes my K-12 education with the addition of gym, music, art and health class.

Voucher system, so there's competition in the market which causes professionals to excel, just like it brings out the best in other industries like technology. Our tax dollars should be spent where our children will actually be able to have some hard skills, rather than come out with heads filled with touchy-feely-mushy crap that's useless in the real world. We shouldn't have to be forced into a monopolized environment run by biased idealogical tradespeople.

Just one more reason I will never visit Kalifornia and spend my tourist dollars. That state is an abomination, and the politicians should be lined up and shot.

Yep, you'll never catch me knowingly spending any money in that state, or with companies HQ'd in that state, damn anti-smoking nanny staters can all go to hell.

I don't know were you went to school but my senior year in high school looked like this:

Calculus
Advanced Comp
Advanced Chem
Physics
Honors Government
AP Lit

Was this your average schedule? No. I, like most seniors, had the option of only taking 4 classes (none of which had to be that challenging) and getting early release. Most did this. This is where the problem lies in the American educational system, no work ethic. You can only get out of an education what you put into it, and most American students are loath to put in any more effort than what is necessary to get a diploma.

I went to collage with many students who graduated from private schools and trust me their education was no better than mine. More often than not the top students in class were the products of the public education system.
