Birthday Cigars... Any suggestions???

Funny... It's EASY to put together a birthday gift for an "aquaintance"... Punch the "gift card" thing, and it's over and done with!

It's another thing to put something together for a hero.

My Dad turns 80 in early April... And I've acquired a 35-50 ct. humi (with appropriate humidification devices) that I need to fill for his B-Day.

I'm suffering acute brain-fart on exactly WHAT cigars should be included in the humi! I mean, I have about 700 on-hand, from most of the makers we discuss here on CI... But I'm perplexed, and look to YOU for some advice!

PROFILE OF VICTIM:

-- He smoked pipes, El Productos, and Swishers most of my pre-pubescence life ( i.e., he's a cheap old curmundgeaon!)...

-- I brought out some Macanudos just after New Years... We smoked... He enjoyed... And the trap was set!

THE PLAN:

-- Fill the humi with sticks that take him through the entire spectrum:
- Claros, to Maduros, to Oscuros
- Mild, to medium, to kick-arse

-- Include a "reference sheet," so he can identify and sort through the sticks, KNOW what he's smoking, and give me a sense for what he prefers.

THE QUESTION:

Just looking for your take on what should be included (max of 40 sticks) to bring a great, 80-something guy into the fold. All suggestions willl be appreciated, even if it means running out and chucking up another 50 bucks to "Get'r Done!!".

Re: Birthday Cigars... Any suggestions???

I'd recommend any PAM or Anejo, if you can find them.

You can't go wrong with AF, RP, CT as well. All nice smokes IMO.

Good Luck and nice gift idea.....I wish my dad smoked!!

Thats great bud. I would get a Padron 40th or any other from the 1926 or the 1964 line. They do sell sample packs of both.

I'd be a very happy Dad if gifted with Bucanero maddies - smallest RG's smoke very sweet. Not Swisher Sweet, but sweet.

You a good son, whatever you do. Tell him we all said "Happy Birthday, Mr. Palm80."

Re: Birthday Cigars... Any suggestions???

Thanks, guys!

All recommendations have been noted, and there are a couple I'll have to procure from my B&M.

The humi is seasoned... A couple of drymistats ready to go... And I've started on a table-format sheet on what he's got, strength, etc.

Surprises are wonderful, and I appreciate your input!!!

too cool Palm, he is a lucky friend! is this the guy you snuck cigars to in the hospital (or do you just like hanging with the Great American Silver-Tops )

anyway i hope he enjoys and while my input is a little less blingy then the rest, is say a Puros Indios- ONLY because i picture old crop dusters smoking these whenever i think of them. Maybe its because of Ronald Reyes being pictured with them all the time

Re: Birthday Cigars... Any suggestions???

How 'bout one or two of everything you have in your collection, to give him the widest variety and most fun in the learning curve. That way you can have the 'agony' of helping him decide which one is going to fall next, and you two can bond by sharing your notes on what you observe about each while you smoke together.

Besides... it'll sure look purty with the variety in there...

Re: Birthday Cigars... Any suggestions???

Thanks again, y'all!! I'm having a great time assembling the gift! Your suggestions did result in a quick trip to the B&M for a couple of super-premiums... But it's worth it!

CRAZY,

Funny you should ask... The gift is for my Dad. Clive (a neighbor) was in the hospital. He was just released (again) yesterday. I called him last night, and he was just getting ready to light up one of the sticks I left at the hospital.

I'll be heading down to his place this afternoon for a mini-herf.

I concur, any PAM or high end Fuente will do. If he is a beginner I would advise anything from the Hemingway line.

Re: Birthday Cigars... Any suggestions???

Hope somebody does that for me when I'm 80! Great gift idea.

Mote 4s if you have them. Otherwise ... VSG, Opus, Davidoff ... put in some that you like so you guys can compare notes.
