white spots on ash

Hello all,
new to cigar smoking and had a ?. I purchased some montecristo 4 cigars (cuban) and they look and taste legit, but compared to my other monte 4's that I know are 100% authentic, these have tiny with needle point size dots on the ashes (the ash is dark grey)? are these authentic?

newcomer looking for a little help.
thanks in advance

Years ago I was told that the spots were caused from the soil being overworked.......somehow it had something to do with the the little white spots you speak of.

I know that tobacco is hard on the soil, and would be curious if that is REALLY what causes it.

I have seen it before too. I always thought it was the "teeth" on a toothy wrapper post burn. Can't back that up with science tho!

I read somewhere that the white specs, sometimes called tooth, are caused by the leaf absorbing small amounts of magnesium from organic fertilizers. When the oil in the leaf begins to come to the surface a small bump or tooth will appear that is the same color as the wrapper, you can sometimes see the little buggers on the wrapper, other times they form on the other side of the wrapper and you can't see them, but when combined with heat they burn perfect and leave a tiny white dot in the ash, I have seen them in filler wrapper also. All the stogies that I have had that have them have been fantastic. jmho

Those bumps that cause the white dots on the ash are called the tooth of the cigar. They are caused by deposits of tobacco oils (the phloem sap) which lend a lot of flavor to the cigar. This is why most people look for a "toothy" cigar. There was a good article on it somewhere, but the best I could find was this: http://www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar...22,824,00.html

Now back to the Pitt game, we are making a comeback.

Couldn't say if they are the real deal or not, but the last one I smoked had the same quality, so if they are fakes, that is not the reason/symptom.

Just thought I would revive an old thread because I was just wondering "what does toothy mean"? And found this thread.

Anyhow if anyone knows of an article about it I'd be interested.

Re: white spots on ash

not that the originator of this thread would care this many years later, but i recently gave coppertop an SLR PC when we drove back into work, and i had one as well. same cab, same everything. one of ours had the white speckles, the other did not.

so, it can be a legit "cuban" cigar and still have those white spots.

my $.02

yeah i don't think this white spots confirm authenticity. I have also seen these white spots on my CAO pirahnas, almost all of them have them. Always wondered what the hell it was.
