Is smoking permitted in "outdoor" sport stadiums?
I went to a Chicago Fire (soccer) home game a while back. Brought some stogies, and my friend brought some too. However, in two hours, we never saw anyone else smoking, so we decided not to light up. The stadium was completely open-air--no roofing of any kind.
Since I rarely attend professional sporting events, I may be out of touch with the times. Anybody know the policy? It probably varies from state to state. |

Most stadiums outdoor baseball and football that I have been to are no smoking, you need to leave the stadium to smoke.

I know in MO and IL, you have to leave the seating area and go to the outside areas to smoke.

We got tickets to a Panthers game way up in the nosebleed section a couple years back. There were a few jokers standing at the very top of the stadium enjoying some stogies. It didn't take very long for Johnny Law to show up to tote them off.
I'd hate to waste a perfectly good smoke by being forced to extinguish it. |

I know some MLB ballparks ( ie Oakland Colliseum ) have designated smoking areas..but they are not where you can actually see the game

It differs from stadium to stadium. It seems that the cigar opponents keep gaining ground on this. I know that Montecristo had a cigar bar in one stadium and they were forced to shut it down after that stadium went completely smoke free. I also remember when they built Jacob's Field in Cleveland they financed the whole thing with something that they called the "Sin Tax". The put a specific tax on cigarettes and liquor that all of that money went to building the stadium. Guess what, when they opened they wouldn't let people smoke in there even though they essentially paid for that stadium. People went crazy and they eventually allowed it. Not sure how it is now. Oh, I'm origianally from Cleveland and have family there. I don't have that kind of random knowledge just floating around in my head for no reason.

I'd say do just what you did. If no one else is lighting up then it's probably not allowed. There are usually signs when you enter the stadium saying that smoking is only allowed in designated areas. Look around before the game and see if you see smoking areas.
Every stadium I've been in here only allows smoking in designated areas. Some. like Coors Field, have TV's so you can keep an eye on the game, but most have a section designated for smokers. You probably don't want to plan on smoking a cigar at a game, tho. |

In Houston you can't smoke at either of the Baseball or Football Stadiums in the seats but both have smoking areas. I think they have TVs in those areas but you can't see the game from there. Not really for cigars but for a quick smoke. We have a MLS team here now but have not been to any of their games.
