Cigar Science with Rob XIII: Blowing smoke out the nose
For this edition of Cigar Science I look at how blowing smoke out of your nose (technically called "retronasal olfaction") changes the flavors you get from a cigar.
![]() I again teamed up with Doc Stogie Fresh for an article in his Stogie Fresh Journal. Enjoy! http://www.stogiefresh.com/journal/C...9B195C33E.html Cheers! Rob ![]()

This is truly a great article and really lays down the rationale for how "retro-haling" can add to your smoking experience.
It does take some practice, but in no time you will be doing it every time you take a draw on a stogie. Well done Rob!!! |

You can differently tell a big difference on the taste and aroma of a fine cigar by using this technique. To me this is the only true way of tasting and really getting the most satisfaction out of a cigar.Great post.

It's funny. I never really noticed that I was doing anything differently than anyone else, until this became a topic of conversation some time ago. I naturally exhaled through my nose when smoking cigars right from the start and took it for granted. Now, depending on the particular cigar, and how my sinuses feel at any particular time, I do this more or less often. I find that "just" releasing smoke through my mouth to be wholly less satisfying in general, so I guess that was the reasoning for my pre-disposition to exhale through the sinuses and nose.
Great article one again Rob! Showing the process and the science behind "retronasal olefaction" and explaining it in the manner you chose, was enlightening. Cheers! CD

Sorry to bump this but I started doing this with the first cigar I ever smoked, I was just blowing out of my mouth, but I've realized blowing out my nose and mouth at the same time (not really blowing the smoke out my nose), I get a ton more flavor.

How will this affect someone with allergies? I take daily allergy medication and I am almost always miserable the day after smoking a cigar. I try to shower right after I am done to rinse off particles, but I usually wake up in the middle of the night and have to go sleep in a recliner to stay upright.
I am going to try this tonight, but I am worried that it will make my allergies go crazy. Any suggestions?

I am not sure what effect blowing smoke out your nose would have on your allergies. I know that with stronger cigars it can be irritating to your nasal cavity even without allergies. So I think I would recommend that if you are going to try it just do it once or twice during the cigar and make sure you do it with a mild cigar the first time.

Great article by the way.
I am always interested in "how things work" and the technical side of stuff so I found this fascinating. Thanks

A guy on another forum put it this way...Imagine yourself listening to your stereo at a low setting. Suddenly your wife cranks it up full blast and you hear sounds you have been missing.
Expelling smoke through your nose opens up new flavors...Most of your taste comes from arouma. Makes sense to me. |

I am a big fan of "retronasal olfaction" or what is sometimes called "Rolling". It really adds to the enjoyment of fine cigars. Thanks, Rob, for your top-notch investigation of the science behind this, and I am going to go check out your guest appearance on Doc Stogie Fresh right now!
