Air filters....

Ok, so i smoked a cigar with bamawrx tonight (great guy if any of yall ever get the chance to smoke with him) and we were discussing air cleaners/purifiers/filters, whatever. He suggested a type that replaces a ceiling fan... i'm open to suggestions here. Its for the restaurant that we smoke in because, as Shelby07 can tell you, it gets pretty smokey in there when you get a lot of people smoking. We have a bit of money to work with, but we're still looking for cheap yet effective. The owner asked me to bring him a list of suggested filters. If anyone has any suggesting for whats good, please let me know. Also, has anyone used the type that works in place of a ceilng fan or has any info on them?... I'd prefer a permanent style as opposed to a free standing filter.... thanks.

If you are looking for the best way to evacuate the smoke & not the the heat & Ac.

Buy a couple of Panasonic whisper quite exhaust fans. They are about $150 each and the best one is the 400 cubic ft per minute model. Uses zip for elect & you cant hear them run.

We are using 4 of them in our smoking room (above the ceiling) & the elec. bill has not changed.

They will have to be exhausted to the outside, so you will need a wall or a roof penetration. You can hook 2 together so as to only need one exterior penatration.

If your cleaning the air in a restaurant/bar type place, I think you'll need something more like a ceiling mounted smoke eater.

This site looks like it could help...

Not sure what we use in the lounge at the shop, but I can check for you. Also consider used. A lot of places here in NY put them in just before the smoking ban went into effect. You might pick one up cheap.

The smoke eater si great but you have to remember to clean it on a regular basis. I worked in a very smokey little bar and if you didn't clean the metal filters once a week, they weren't very effective.

When I had a cigar lounge we tried several products. The Ionic Breeze type of stuff, the ozone makers, air purifiers, etc. They all did a pretty good job of clearing the smoke out of the air, but none of them was effective at removing the smell. The best thing we had was a lot of plants in the smoking areas and then a killer air evacuation system. Paired up with a couple of the ionic type air purifiers and high ceilings and our place had a lot less cigar smell than most other clubs I have visited.

You will find keeping the place clean will be your best bet. Wash all your ashtrays every day. Vacuum the carpets daily. Do not have cloth furniture... if you do, then vacuum it daily. Mop any hard floors daily and make sure you wipe down all the tables, bar, etc, each night. We had a 9000 sq ft place, and it took about 1 hour for two of us to clean up everything before going home, but it was worth it. Keeping everything clean will go a long way. We also kept the air circulation running all night so the air did not go stale before we opened the next day.

Also, use Febreze on your rugs, furniture, etc. It will help a lot.

That thing looks very nice, let me know how it works. I plan on buying a house within the next year and plan on turning a bedroom into a smoking room and that looks prefect!

Have you looked on e-bay for any smoke eaters? With smoking bans going in effect all over the place, bars and restaurants are turing their ceiling weights into ca$h. My cigar club in NJ went around to a few places making offers and they were able to pick up a few on the cheap!

I have a home in northern Montana (important only because who wants to sit out on the porch this winter smoking). What ionic purifiers are recommended for turning a room into a smoking retreat.

Thanks
