I was wondering if freezing your cigars effects the flavor in any way?
Because I live in California, and when I get cigars from the mail I would feel a lot safer freezing them because I live in such a HOT SPOT! Mostly this time of year, Just in case of Tobacco Beetles! :errrr: I haven't don't it yet to any cigars, but I just wanna get a heads up. I've heard from "Doc Stogie Fresh" that you put your cigars in the freezer for 3 days then you put them in the refrigerator for 1 day, is this right? I'm pretty sure it is just wanna make sure, thanks! |

The Doc did a nice run down in the latest podcast about it. it was referring to Beetles, But the concept is there. I would be concerned with the humidity factor freezing them for too long of a period of time. If youfreeze them in Zip Locks you may be ok...but be careful. And listen to the Docs latest...

Be careful freezing cigars for too long. If you freeze them in a self-defrosting freezer, the cycles to defrost the freezer will ruin the cigars if left for any length of time. Freezing is done for tobacco beetles and only for a short period of time (5 to 7 days). If you are concerned about the heat creating a problem with beetles, reduce the humidity in your humidor to not go above 68% and you should not have a problem. Cigars like being cool, if you live in a hot, DRY spot, put them in a plastic bag, throw a big water pillow in the bag and store them in the frig. That's what I would recommend, but remember, this advise may be worth exactly what you paid for it. Nothing!

I have been intending to join the community and just hadn’t done it but this thread made me get in gear. I will do the profile and everything later.
Both Hubby and I freeze cigars that worry us. You can’t use the freezer for long-term storage. We freeze for 3 or 4 days then move them to the refrigerator for about the same amount of time. Then after they come out of the refrigerator and return to room temperature in the humidor they go. Hope that helps. Oh by the way you may see some dead bugs in the freezer bags so if you use a cooladore make sure to put them in new bags. DJ |

I could be out to lunch here, but IIRC, in order to freeze cigars cold enough to kill the average beetle / egg / larvae, you'll have to go a whole bunch colder than your normal hme freezer will go. I believe it's something like < -20 F or something.
Also, as noted above, freezing should only be for the killing of bugs, not long term storage. Think of the term "Freeze Dried Coffee". |

Yeah its about that self defroster in a freezers.
I can't really tell but ill figure it out. On that note, Everyone I know not to just freeze my cigars! I'm not planing on leaving them in there, this is about tobacco beetles! that's question I was getting at. this is what I meant... When freezing your cigars does it effects the flavor in any way? And how to do it right, to get rid of tobacco beetles, thats all! I guess I made this rather confusing! ![]() |

If you do not get a really thick (4-6 inches/year) build-up of ice, lining the sides of your freezer, IT IS SELF DEFROSTING!
Freezing DOES NOT effect the flavor of the cigar. Unless you currently have tobacco beetles issues, I recommend NOT freezing. Most cigars shipped into the US have already gone through a freezing process by the manufacturer in the country of origin. ALL TOBACCO have tobacco beetle larva (pipe tobacco, cigarettes, cigars). Freezing cigars places the larva in a "dormant state". Humidity of 72%+ and temps above 72+ degrees will cause the larva to hatch. My husband and I keep all our humidors at our house at 66 to 68% humidity and we have never had a problem even though we keep our house at 77 to 80 degrees. Quote:
