Cigar Jack I wouldn't put up a completely negative review based on one cigar. You could have just gotten a bad smoke. But if it was based on a few and your feelings are the same, but all means post it. Just remember, as several people have stated already, that someone, somewhere loves that cigar. We all have different tastes. The value of sites like yours are that you have a series of reviews and a cigar lover can read them and get a sense of whether their taste meshes with yours. In that case, they would probably do well to avoid that particular cigar.

I felt bad that I posted a review on a blind cigar from one of the panels here and gave that cigar a 1. I felt bad, but seeing as that was the only shot I had at the cigar, I needed to write that review. I most likely did get a bad cigar, but I only had that 1 opportunity to review so I needed to post it. Usually if I smoke something I don't like I'll try 1 more, and then just drop that smoke. I'm not normally one to go around and spout off about this being a bad smoke, unless asked. I also would not drop an entire manufacturer based upon 1 cigar, each line that is produced is so different that I might not like one, but I will like others. This came up in another thread today, and I might not like Acid cigars, but I enjoy JAVA and some of the Naturals (root is a nice smoke). So all I can add to this is don't give up because of on line in a brand. And sometimes what might not be great to your tastes might and more than likely will be the cigar for someone else. I am sure that no manufacturer is trying to make cigars that no one likes, so I agree to not bash the entire brand.

Just my 2 cents worth...

In my opinion, if a cigar is consistently bad, you call it as you see it. If it's a dog rocket, you owe it to your readers to say so. I'd just be careful it's the cigar your trashing and not the manufacturer. (Not that you would, of course C.J.)

I've yet to try an Avalon cigar. I've been looking around for them, but I haven't found them yet. The story behind the cigars and the process by which they're made is intriguing.

Be careful we don't confuse an honest offering of an experience/opinion on a particular vitola or place of business for the purpose of dialog with an intentional scorched earth policy toward someone they have an axe to grind with.

We have all read reviews and all done reviews ourselves, and we have all complained when we thought reviews were skewed positive under certain (ahem...advertising) circumstances. I think the original thread was an honest, albeit emotional, reaction to a recent cigar experience. If the poster had just published his review and left it at that, I doubt anyone would have taken it as anything else.

So, again, be careful about being too sensitive. Honest opinion should be encouraged here. Axe grinding should be taken somewhere else.

Your results may vary.

Reviews based on smoking a cigar only once have to be treated with a huge grain of salt. There are too many confounding variables (other than taste, aroma, etc) that can influence the experience you get from a cigar including what you ate before, your mood, the weather conditions, your drink pairing etc....And even for high quality cigar companies there is a large variation from stick to stick in terms of rolling. The only way that you can reduce the contribution of these extraneous factors is by smoking the cigar a few times before doing a review.
For those that haven't seen it yet I discuss this point in more detail in my recent article:

It just goes to show you...you never know who is reading your threads...

Be as courteous on the forums as you would be in person.

AND REMEMBER....

Like my grandfather always told me:

"WE are all different...if we were all the same, everyone would be after your grandma"

I'll admit I was emotional when I started this thread. I wasn't trashing the company just upset by experience I had with the cigar and trashed the cigar. I do typically smoke at least two if not more before reviewing a cigar. I think because of my original post was off base a bit this thread and degenerated and unless someone has an objection I'm going to ask a Mod to close it so it doesn't get anymore off track and start a flame war.
