How do you explain your hobby to your wife?

It seems like my wife is complaining more and more about my little passion for cigars I have. Everytime a new box of goodies shows up at my door she doesnt understand why I need more cigars when I already have a humidor full of them. She always says I smoke way too much (only about 3 a week) and that it is bad for my health and goes on about throat cancer and lung problems......etc,etc,etc.
I know other brothers on here must go through the same thing with their wifes so my question is how do you justify your passion to her?
Help Please!!!!!nsure:

I killed mine and burried her in the neighbors yard. Shhhhhh.......Don't tell her family, I told them she has lost her voice and can't talk on the phone.

Actually, I told my wife I could either smoke a cigar here and there, or go back to smoking cigarettes all the time. She saw it my way!!!!

First I would try reasoning with her. This is your hobby. You work hard and this is the way you reward yourself. It is one of the few things in life that actually brings you some joy. You could be doing far worse things. You could take up a heroin addiction, hookers, aggressive drinking, internet gambling, etc. From that perspective, cigars don't seem so bad. Tell her if she doesn't like you smoking cigars, maybe you'll start smoking crack instead. If that does not work, I would increase cigar consumption in an attempt to condition her. She will complain whether you smoke 3 per week or 10 per week. For a few month, double your cigar purchase and consumption. Once you go back to 3 a week, it won't seem so bad to her anymore. Plus, she'll be wiped out from all the complaining of the prior months. She will give in eventually. You must persevere. You are stronger than she is.

Well I will be really screwed if she finds out about my heroin addiction, hookers, aggressive drinking, internet gambling, and crack smoking. But I will save that for another post.

My wife was pissed about the hookers, but she understood the rest.

I have the same problem on a smaller scale. Mine just doesn't like the money that goes into it, but I understand that. I just reason with her and reinforce the fact that there are MUCH worse and more expensive things that I could take up.

Umm...I ask her if she feels like sitting out on the dock with me or going to a cigar friendly bar? LOL

Actually she doesn't mind them. She did once say she does not want me to "have to have one" everyday. Which I currently dont. I sometimes go for a week without one(won't smoke unless I can relax) or more. She is somehow very understanding which is probably why I married her. She pretty much kicks ass in terms of being a wife.

Start leaving magazines and information about a new hobby lying around. Guns, restoring cars, sports memorabillia, coins. Once she realizes you are going to have hobbies, cigars won't seem all that bad.
If none of these phase her, try bass fishing.

I let my Old Lady know that if I didn't spend time (& money) smoking cigars, I'd want to spend more quality time with her. She bought me a humidor for Christmas...

Give her a choice: either you smoke cigars or you find a young girlfriend.

I guess I am the lucky one on this thread. my wife does not nag or bitch at me and we have been together for almost 18 years

Just got married about a month ago so i go through the whole your gonna die and get cancer. It used to be much worse but after i sat down and explained the main reasons i enjoyed this hobby, shes been much more forgiving when a new box of cigars shows up. Hell, shes even having a custom humidor built for a wedding gift to me.

If that doesnt work, get separate bank accounts and dont tell her how much you spend. If shes home all the time then have your packages shipped to you at work. If that doesnt work, you can do what a buddy of mine does and have them shipped to a friends house. If all that fails just tell her at least you dont beat her. She might look at you a little differently after that but......

Luckily for me, my wife also smokes cigars. Her only complaint maybe the number of humidors in my office.

My fiance likes cigars, too. It was actually the complete reverse for me. She was a cigarette smoker and I convinced her to switch to occasional cigars with me instead. As for advice, I would probably recommend just buying her off if at all possible. Say "I know they're expensive, but wouldn't it be nice to get some new furniture."
