In my opinion , even though you state you "never smoke between 9-9", you should have never make the promise to your neighbor that you won't.

Things can change.

Besides, a perceived concession is a concession and it changes, weakens your letter. You tell your neighbors they are rude and they have no right to control your behavior. Then you tell them you will restrict your behavior in their favor.

Rob - I'm impressed with the way you handled this. Obviously, by leaving a note, the couple upstairs are also not confontational and this could've led to a very uncomfortable situation had this been handled in person (especially if done in anger).

Your letter is concise and to the point. I applaud you on standing up for your LEGAL rights and also for your consideration for their comfort. You've done a good job and have represented all BOTLs everywhere.

I would have pretended that I never got the letter and started smoking two or three times as much and made them come TALK to me. For them to Leave a note on your door is a chicken shit way to deal with things. You are engaged in a legal activity. If and when they work up the nerve to actually TALK to you tell them to go pound salt. Personally I find easily offended people offensive.
