I think the portal page was not being utilized as well as it could have been. I liked the maps, who's online, and as a place to showcase the special stuff like JR's video reviews, vids of the trips to factories, events, and such. If you start packing everything into the default forum page, it may start to get a little cluttered.

Using the portal for "hello - how's it goin'", "here's what this place is all about", "how to get started", "what's happening", "meet our mods", info for manufacturers and store owners, podcasts, special events, and such would be a good approach.

Just my 2 cents...

Will the live post section be coming back. I spent more time there than anywhere else. Every day after catching up I would leave the live post page up in the backround so I could do other things and see when a new post came in.

I also used the live post feature a lot. A nicer chat room, if it's available and feasible, would be good, too.

I like your thinking. See this is the part that I listen to you guys on what you want to keep from the old forum. I plan on finishing the update tonight when I get back from a bit of last minute shopping.

I am guilty of jumping the portal and going straight to the forums - hell, I usually leave a browser window loaded with multiple tabs (User CP, Today's Post, PM, etc) open for days or weeks just so I have everything organized the way I like it.

The portal is good for people who have never been here before. When I go to a forum site, I want to get an idea of what it all about - maybe some highlighted areas I want to visit first, sponsored and special events, etc. There is a great philosophy (mission statement) behind this board - let's get it out there on the first page you see when typing in the default url!

If I am a manufacturer or shopkeep, a big list of forum areas doesn't quickly let me know if there are any opportunities for me to advertise, promote my brands, announce special events, nationwide sales/promos, etc. We have a great ad appearing in a national mag - why would we want someone new to the board have to find it in a thread somewhere or maybe see a tiny banner? Advertise the advertisement on the front page!

Think of it as a overview and quickstart page. I think the regulars might use the portal page if there was compelling content there (examples I mentioned earlier). Maybe section it off for new users, advertisers/shops/manufacturers, and regulars. Just brainstorming out loud here...

Cool I added it back up and some things do not work yet but I will fix them tonight!

We will make the portal better and also a comment by Incognito was to keep the navigation bar the same throughout the forum so no matter where you are you can get back to the forum or portal page.
