mixing cigars in a humidor
Have heard that non-sweet cigars will be infused by the flavors of sweet cigars (Java, Acids, etc) and potentially ruin your precious collection. Is there any truth to this? Would like to know because I am just about finished with a walk-in humidor and have sweet-flavored cigars. Right now, I keep them separate from the rest of the sticks and am wondering if I need to do the same thing when I transfer all the sticks to the cigar room. Any information would be greatly appreciated...

I don't think it really matters for a walk-in as long as you keep them in different locations in the room. Every B&M I have been to stores Acids in the same humidor with the rest of their cigars.

In a humidor, flavored cigars will destroy the any other cigar. Since you have a walk-in, I would think that keeping them in a seperate box should be enough of a quarantine.

Ya, I don't think it would matter in a walk in, now in a small desktop, I can def. see a flavor transfer coming from an overpowered infused cigar to a natural blended one.

thanks a bunch for the replies....you are right on with what I thought. I plan on storing the sweet flavored (Acids/Java, etc) in a small humidor and let it go at that. That is what I do now and it hasnt been a problem so far and the "other" cigars are a lot closer in proximity to them. I like the word "quarantine"....as far as I am concerned, you could probably "quarantine" most of the "sweet" cigars forever....no offense to those who like them, but just not my cup of tobacco! On another note, I am such a cheapskate and I bought a full box of Java's and hate like hell not getting my money's worth, so I keep them in hopes of smoking them one day...guess I would have to be fairly drunk to smoke one again....or ????
Again, Thanks....

It seems to me that the whole idea of a walk in humidor is to be with the cigars, soooo - get yourself a glass-topped humidor (I recommend Thompson's barrel, the ONLY Thompson product I would recommend) so you can be close to them and see them, but by all means protect your precious cigars from associating with those sweet smelling things. Just imagine, any tiny little taste of roses or lavender or licorice getting into a straight tobacco stick would definitely change it for normal use - and it would not even be changed enough to make it a flavored cigar, just a ruined taste to something expensive and fine, and chosen for its flavor in the first place.

Keep them in a separate box, just like they do in the B&M's.

OK guys....ran into a few problems, but moved all the furniture in this afternoon and tomorrow the shelves are going in. For me, it has been most difficult to arrange furniture and placement of shelves, but that seems to be settled as I write this. A few more days and I should be somewhat up to speed and pics will be posted. I have spent the last few hours just sitting here in the humidor and trying to imagine how this will look, what should be placed here or there, etc. Once you see the pics you will have a better idea as to what I am talking about. For instance, I have four vino temp wine coolers and deciding whether to stack them or place them side by side was a big decision. Plus, have a large Carlos Torano humidor, a huge converted china cabinet humidor, two stand alone humidors, and many small box humidors. Where to place them and the cigars, too has taken some planning. Plus, am trying to place a small desk with laptop and printer, along with an LCD tv...I know...it is a great problem to have, but, nevertheless, I am not good at visualizing things, so I proceed at a snail's pace. Doing it right, whatever that means, is what I am trying to do....! Do I plan on smoking in here? Well, I have installed an exhaust fan and have smoked two cigars this evening to see how well it works. Of course, only a few cigars are in the room right now. Yes, I know about smoking in here and the pro's and cons are just about even. And, I have spoken with some "old school" experienced cigar people to get their feedback based on their experiences. Since I will probably be the only one smoking here, I am probably going to do so. Of course, I will have 1 or 2 air purifiers, a circulating fan, along with the exhaust fan to clean up the smoky mess I make, but, will have to wait and see.
Finally, anyone contemplating doing something like this...stop thinking about it and do it. It has been an exciting adventure and process and I look forward to sharing my experiences with the B'sOTL. Best

I second that emotion. Life is short, and dear, and if you want it, just do it. It is becoming harder and harder to find peaceful places to enjoy our hobby, pastime, whatever it is. Your home is your castle. JUST DO IT! Chuck, congratulations. You will never regret doing this, and anyone who tells you that you did something wrong - they're just jealous.

Sounds to me Chuck your all over this project--as far as the way you set up your Humi --I'd recommend walking into a fine B & M were you live to get an idea's and ask question's of the owner or operator of how & why they come up with their placement of stogies..This way you will have a better understanding of why they store the way they do...
Great post Chuck & Good Project---Paul
