No chairs, nothing to drink, no nothing!! The magistrate is angry and he might change his mind and make you take Phillies instead! Or worse yet, just a picture of an Opus so you'll be tortured by the thought of all the great cigars you're missing!
You'll sit on a rock and draw smiley faces on coconuts so you'll have someone to herf with.

I speak for nobody but myself...but I think Phillies would be worse than nothing - for me. I'd be tempted to smoke them but then once I finally got them lit (probably by rubbing them together) all I'd have is a phillie...

These are not exactly my cup of tea. I remember trying them once on a long car drive and I couldn't get through more than an inch or so and i had to chuck it out the window. That was not one of my more enjoyable drives through Ohio.

I thought it was just me! On the first trip I did to the US I had to "make do" with Phillies because there wasn't a cigar shop within easy reach. Damned if I could smoke more than an inch without it getting all bitter and nasty on me. Thank goodness I soon got to the store and got some REAL smokes.

you are not alone my friend. I have a cousin who loves 'em but I don't know how he does it. Since you're in the UK, do you ever smoke Hamlets? I think that is the UK version, in a sense. I bought one a while back but didn't smoke it yet. Maybe those are better?

I know they only come in very slim ring gauges so it might be hard to compare but I'd be curious to know your thoughts Degarbie.

Well, it's been quite a while since I've smoked a Hamlet - I used to smoke them a few years ago before I got into smoking cigars proper. The miniatures (cigarillos) tended to have what I'd think of as a strong tobacco taste with a bit of spice, but tended to get bitter towards the end. However, I used to really enjoy the Hamlet Reserve (similar to a Panatela), they have a nice rich tobacco flavour to them that I really enjoyed - a little like Villigers but smoother.

As far as comparing to Phillies, I'd say that Hamlet (although they're machine made also) feel better in the hand and more like a "real" cigar. The sugary sweetness and papery sheet wrapper of the Phillies was strange, more like a cigarette in some ways.

All this is from memory, so I could be wrong but I hope it's helpful Colin I might go back and try the Hamlet Reserve again but it seems a lot of places have stopped stocking them.

That sounds good. I'd like to find the reserves too. The next time I'm back in the UK maybe we can get some folks together and have a herf. I have some Oliva Vs and some others that are hard to find in the UK so it might be fun to try some of this stuff. I won't be back for any reasonable amount of time until springtime so we have time to devise a plan and who knows, maybe we'll even have some good weather.

When I said that Hamlets are like Swishers I meant that they were the low priced alternative available at newspaper stands and the like - similar to how swishers are at gas/petrol stations in the US. Now I'm curious to have one but I think it needs to be their biggest ring gauge in order to have a good tasting.
