Pre-Castro or not. They are illegal! My first purchase was a partial box, 17 sticks exactly, of 1956 Partagas Cristal Tubos. I have smoked only 2 of them and they are fresh and the tobacco is outstanding. When I cracked open the tubo there was that negative pressure sound that is usually there in a tubo. The smoke lasted a good while and I savored every moment of it. I also bought 5 sticks of Cohiba Siglo from 1966. I've only smoked one stick of this and this is THE very best of any Cohiba I have tasted. I'm only 27 and these smokes never once tasted old.

Pre embargo cigars or cigars made with pre-embargo tobacco are perfectly legal in the states, as long as they were exported before the embargo was enacted.

I think you're asking the wrong crowd here. Most of us have only been lucky enough to attend the buffets put on by Golden Corral

Seriously, enjoy the vintage smokes. I'll bet they're pretty damn good.

Have I ever been to an auction at Sothbeys or Christys? Let me answer you this way... I never smoke anything but pre-embargo sticks. Providing I am in the mood to crack open one of my Camacho Liberty boxes and it is a special ocasion of some sort. Otherwise I usually smoke in my budget of 5 bucks on average for a stick

I have a lot of vintage clear havanas. Probably about 300 sticks ranging from 1910 to 1950. Actually, I am trying to get rid of them bacause they are just too old and are taking up space. They have a very nice and mild falvor, but just dont have enough complexity for my taste. Maybe I should host a contest of sorts with some of these for the price. hmmmmm.

Anyway, I do have some hand rolls also from 1945 but again I think too much aging is a bad thing. In my mind 5 - 15 years is pure bliss. Between 15 and 25 it really depends on the cigar and after 25 I tend to be dissapointed. Just my .02

Why bother having a contest? It'd be so much easier to just send them directly to me.

Great comment Alex.

I too have wondered about aging and how long a guy can keep them around. While I don't have anything remotely close to what you're talking about, I have even wondered if "newer/or recent production" cigars will actually age as "older production" cigars - perhaps due to the growth, air quality, chemicals, etc. differences from years past.

What I'm trying to get at is something simliar to what occurs in forestry - old growth wood vs new growth wood (e.g. tobacco grown with intent to age vs tobacco grown to deliver a more immediate result).

While I recognize a tobacco plant doesn't grow long like a tree, I have wondered if there are differences in the plants as they may have evolved over time, which in turn could effect the aging process.

Make any sense??

Someday I plan to hit one of those high-end auctions for the purpose of acquiring some rare aged smokes. Until then, I'll probably accidentally age a few in my humidors! And hope for a good score at an estate sale.

I have been very lucky, at a herf a guy brought in a miscellaneous assortment of rather old Cuban smokes. And passed them around for people to try! (That guy is still my hero.) Most of them petite coronas. I don't recall the exact age or the exact sticks, but I believe a few of them were from the 1960's. The rest were from the 80's and 90's.

Alex, maybe you should hit up Aljrka and sell them at the auctions he goes too..

I would love the contest, but you can re-stock sticks that you enjoy with the money you get back..

I know this isn't gonna be popular.. Sorry..

What he said. But instead "me" meaning him, "me" meaning me!

A contest would be awesome! I have a feeling people would be just killing themselves to win! Maybe we need a Cigar Live auction with the proceeds going to site improvements or events or something! (Or to you, either way.)

Start of public service announcement -

Or a charity auction. They are plenty of good causes that need money.

End of public service announcement -
