Thermo Electric Cooling Unit

Does anybody know where I can buy a thermo electric cooling unit. I want to install it in my cabinet. I've searched the web, but most units are large. I'd like to find something that is under 6x6 and under $200. Do they exist

I haven't found any on the internet, but you can build one for right around $100. THere are some sites out there that tell you how to build one. It doesn't seem like it is too much work, but you do need a little electronics know how.

I spend a whole day on that subject......What a waste of time.

Just remember that the thero unit has a hot side. It would be a huge pain in my opinion....

I have been looking for some time for a similar unit, but like you, can't find one in a reasonable price range or size. Let us know if you have any luck.

Take a 12v Peltier-element cooler/warmer and rip the guts out?

These 12v coolers have been around for decades:

I was wondering about this. You can find these pretty cheap sometimes for a little cooler. I guess it would work on a largers volume if you only wanted to cool to 65-70. The cheap ones don't have an adjustable thermostat but you could buy something pretty easy.

I will be curious to see someone try this.

I don't think these units are big enough, but this will give you an idea.

TE Units

If you go to the Vinotemp website you can see they list the replacement parts for their wine coolers (TE units as well) it appears their price aren't too bad. My thought was to buy the units a couple TE units and a controller from them and see if it would work.

Go here and you can and scroll down to "Download Parts List in Excel format"

Those TE units are pretty cheap. It looks like it can take a small cooler down 25 degrees from ambient. I wonder how much space they can take down 10-15 degrees?

Cool instructions for making a cooler.

The TEC of a Vinotemp is supposedly only 90w, so a pair of those 50w ones would do the job in a comparable sized cabinet. Still would need to get the power supply and a controller though.

EDIT:Actually I think 90w is the draw of the whole vinotemp, its most likely a 50w pelt.

Okay, all you need is two heatsinks and fans, you can buy them already built. $9.79 each

http://www.altex.com/product_info.php?products_id=6538

You need one DC Power Supply. You would need to check the specs on the TE Unit to make sure you get the right Amps, but here is an example. $35.00

http://www.altex.com/product_info.php?products_id=6116

Here is your thermostat. $20

http://www.altex.com/product_info.php?products_id=8558

Finally, you need the TEC Device. Here is one from Ebay $20

There are the parts totaling about $95. The wiring is another story. My dad is an electronics person so he was going to draw the schematic for me to wire it up. That is what I learned from my research.
