Strength and Length of Cigar Aftertaste!
Hey folks,
I have been doing an awful lot of research on this subject lately, mainly because my wife is pregnant with twins and can smell every single thing! Of course it doesn't help that I now have an hour commute each way and I smoke in the morning, at lunch, AND on the drive home. Many of you my be aware that I roll cigars. After smoking at an event of mine last weekend, I realized something...the age of the cigar has EVERYTHING to do with the strength and length of the aftertaste. Just two days ago I smoked an original release Fuente 858 sungrown from 2000 in the morning. By dinner time (and no additional cigars smoked) there was no aftertaste whatsoever and I didn't wake up this morning with pasty cigar funk. Yesterday, I smoked an original release La Gloria Cubana. Again, no aftertaste by dinner and no funky mouth paste this morning. I have found that cigars that I freshly roll (at least the ones with the youngest tobacco (>2 yrs)) leave the longest aftertaste that my wife always notices. What I have derived from my "experiments" is that the younger the tobacco and thus higher levels of nicotine, the greater the strength and length of a cigar's aftertaste. Thank you for looking! SVB |

Nice experiment SVB, something to remember when I smoke a "young" cigar!

Interesting. I never really thought about the length of the aftertaste...

Are you speaking of release dates or growth dates? I have a hard time keeping up with how long different lines of cigars are aged prior to release/sell dates, so I really don't know if I have much of anything with age on it (except maybe a couple that people have gifted to me).

I have always heard the longer a cigar ages the more mellow it gets. But as far as me that doesn't effect the aftertaste. I think the more cigars I smoke over a period of the the more my pallet is condition and the less I have ean aftertaste no matter the cigar.

I have to differ with you on the palate (pallet) statement, as I smoke 2-3 cigars daily and consistently. I don't find there is a particular conditioning, unless you just have a constant aftertaste or as I like to call it, my-wife-can-smell-my-cigar-breath.

I have noticed that it depends on what I do after the cigar as well. If I eat or drink alot then the after taste is almost always gone. If I smoke and then have a drink or two I wake up the next morning with cigar linger.....
So you roll your own......at least you can make what you like.....what are they compared to??? |

It makes sence that the after taste would be less with an aged cigar because as the tobacco ages, amonia is released, there by reducing the after taste.

What an interesting rule-of-thumb that could create....only smoke aged cigars. If I had the patience and the inventory, I could live with that
