Um, that's a provincial law, not a federal one. Besides, Vancouver is going even farther.

Also new, Nova Scotia is banning smoking in cars if there is someone in the car under the age of 19 ... I expect that law to spread across the country fairly quickly.

Anyhow, we're in Canada, a Socialist country - the government is supposed to protect you from yourself.

Dictator ship

Hate to say it but sometimes I get flashbacks on the way it is in Cuba and how they dictate your every move.... Hate to see that in the states.

Just stay far behind on the federal tax and you'll be happy. Yours is 20.5% (IIRC); ours is 67%. However, yours is capped at a nickel a cigar; ours has no cap.

I'm guessing that some form of SCHIP or similar is pretty well inevitable in 2009, though. Assuming that the war is lost, it'll be interesting to see who wins the battle: premium cigar makers (who want a low cap) or mass-market cigar makers (who want a low percentage).

Dont worry yall, we arent far behind. Just wait. Especially with the wonderful candidates for president that we have to choose from. If i vote, i will be voting for someone not even on the ballot. What a difference my vote will make.

I dunno - we don't have "Health and Safety" here - yet ... and once the UK has that proposed road use tax, your Nanny state will be supreme.

I don't know....We DO have California.

Was in Northern Cali for Christmas. We were visiting the Mumm Winery for Lunch with the Family. After Lunch I walked BEYOND the parking lot by an easy 50 yds and lit up a stick. There was no one within 100+ yds of me. I'm in a relatively rural area on private property.

It wasn't FIVE MINUTES and a guy approaches me... "You can't smoke that here" !!! NOT an employee of Mumm's.....Just Johnny F'in Dogood.

We had a short "discussion" and i continued smoking my cigar. But our little interaction RUINED the moment for me. As Tony Soprano would say.."****in Guy" !!

We surely PAY with lower wages, long travel distances, etc here in Montana. But at least You can still smoke in 90% of the State without getting bitched at.

I DO feel Your pain.

Live in Ohio and you'd think you're in Canada. We were tricked into this law. I am hoping some F. Lee Baily type attorney can beat this stupid law.

That makes me angry and I don't even live there. Smoking is a choice brought about by the consumer to be made. If you want to raise a bunch of weak willed children in your society, so they are not put forth to any trial and tribulation, so that they are going to look towards someone their whole life for protecting them. I mean covering them up so minors cant see them? are you out of your f*ing mind? Has everyone got such a self righteous stick up their ass that these select few can determine what a nation of people should protect themselves from? I'm not talking about just Canada here either. We have a smokeless ban in downtown Houston.. you cant smoke in bars anymore..or any business for that matter, unless the business's business is 90% Tobacco. does that not go against every right as a patron who wants to drown themselves in alcohol and ruin their liver, or have just a simple drink and a smoke, yet they cant. they cant light a cigar or cigarette and forget about doing it outside either, cause then you will pollute the air around you! Because this entire atmosphere is just faltering on the smog caused by smokers and is killing everyone around them. If you wanna ban something thats causing respiratory illnesses in all ages, WITHOUT it being their choice, ban cars in California. The they have the worst air quality in the nation and it isn't because of smoking. Children as young as 5 develop lung problems due to the smog in that state.... ok ill stop ranting sorry.
