I'm not really sure what causes the white mold on the starter trays it's always there year after year. Even when I used different trays on different years. The mold doesn't transfer to the plants. I started my seeds about 10 days ago most have sprouted I'll thin each tray 2-3 times before the reach 1-2 inches tall. I used to go to great pains to plant only one seed per compartment. but if it doesn't germinate you've lost 1-2 weeks maybe that planting for the year. So now I put 5 or more then thin them down to 1 per compartment. Tobacco seeds take from 7-21 days to germinate then aprox. 4-5 weeks to reach 6-8 inches. I took a pic of the tray with the plants however the plants were so small they were not visible. maybe this weekend.
Eran, If I had to guess I would say that your soil might have dried out. The soil must remain moist until you transplant outside. Try again soon this time cut holes in the bottom of each compartment fill with potting soil then the seeds. Place the egg carton in some type of container that will hold 1-2 inches of water. Fill container with water to near top of carton. Then all you have to do is check water level every couple of days.
Greg, (Lok17) The best place to start is in the wife's flower garden. They really love that you show so much interest in their garden (until they realize it's tobacco). LOL, But seriously Tobacco plants are very pretty when they are flowering.
It's not to late to start some seeds for decorative plants for this year. If you live in the south or west you might still be able to grow a crop. Then you can roll your own. If interested pm me with your name and address I get you some in the mail.

Thanks for the info on the mold Brian, I'll quit worrying about it now! My seedlings are almost an inch tall now. In this neck of the woods it'll be a few more weeks before they can go outside. I'm hoping they get up to 5-6" before that happens.

Eran,
I use styrofoam float trays these float in water until time to transplant. You can get disposable foil 13x9 cake pans at any grocery store. These work great the styrofoam egg cartons would probably work best. But you could try some of each and see how the paper cartons hold up. If the paper would hold up you could cut each segment apart and plant directly in ground without removing from paper. You would have to remove the plant and soil from the styrofoam carton.

Dale,
Sounds like you have it under control. How about some pics?

Squid,
You sure do turn out some fine lighters. How do they hold up if you carry it in your pocket. Do you take custom orders?

I finally remembered to get the pics off the camera. These were taken 9 days ago. The one on the left shows some seedlings I transplanted from the starters to 3" pots. From left to right the varieties are Connecticut Shade, Connecticut Broadleaf, Narrow Leaf, Small Stalk Black Mammoth and Goose Creek Red. There are still some in the starter trays in the pic on the right, everything except the Goose Creek Red. I'll transplant those directly from the starter trays. Should be interesting to see how they all do!

Some of these will go into large pots on the back deck, some into some garden space. More pics in a few weeks!

OK, time for an update - almost 4 weeks ago I transplanted most of my seedlings to large pots on my deck (no real garden space this year) and put all but 3 of them in wall-of-water covers. As you can see, the ones in the wall-of-water have done very well. I took the first pic as I took off the wall-of-water on the first one. It has a couple leaves that are 10" long already. The other pic is of those three that have had to endure the Colorado spring weather fluctuations on their own. They may eventually catch up, we'll see.

I have a total of 15 plants that are as far along as that first picture - 4 different varieties. Thanks again to MrMaduro for providing the seed. This is going to continue to be fun! I need to start studying how to ferment tobacco. I may actually end up with enough to give it a try!

Dale,
If you go to seedman.com he has free plans how to build a kiln for fermenting your tobacco. Also he has several different books on tobacco, from raising, curing, fermenting, and rolling. Plus he has several other varieties of seed available for sale. Your pics look great. I'm having trouble getting mine on photo bucket, I send them but they never show up. I'll try to get this straightened out so I can post mine.
