I've got about 60 plants growing right now. I have some Burley, Connecticut Shade, and 2 different Havana varieties. Probably going to transplant them next week,(I hope they are big enough). Glad to see someone else doing this as well. I'll try to post some pictures soon. Brian or Dale?......how big should they be before you set them out in the garden?

Kevin,
I wait until they get about 6-8 inches tall before I transplant them. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your pics. It's a neat hobby don't you think?

Ok, so I transplanted them today. Kinda worried though, the root system seems very weak. Root Rot maybe? Anyways, we will see. Transplanted about 60 plants to the garden.

Kevin,
I planted 100 plants last Thursday of 5 different varieties. I'll take some pics tomorrow or the next day. They look pretty good, I will have to replant 3 or 4 plants. I'll set out the other 100 or so later this week.

I started mine around the end of March and here are some pictures.
That is terrible to hear about your plants dieing. I started mine in a little peat wafer greenhouse as well under a plant light 24 hours a day. Then after about a month I pulled the lid and allowed them to bask in the heat lamp for about 8 hours a day for a week and then after that 24 hours a day with the lamp a bit further from them than normal for another week. Then back to the original height. I grew mine on my desk at work so on the nice days (no wind) I would set the tray outside to get more acclimated to the real sunlight. A few days of that and they really started groing wild. I also used Miracle Grow plant food that was in a bottle that resembled a disk detergent bottle every time I wattered them. This got them growing really well. Once they were ready to get into some real soil I put them in some miracle grow potting mix in 8" pots that were about half full. This way the walls of the pots could help protect them from wind and give them protection from all day hot sun. Whenever it would storm I moved them into the garage to keep them from getting beat to death. I actually got lucky because we had two hail storms with sizes above golfball and I got them indoors just in time on both storms. When they started to grow out of the pots I left them outside for the whole sun and fresh rain water. Luckily we havn't had anymore hail problems. Then once they were starting to slow down growing I dumped one of the plants into my hand and noticed that they were root bound and ready to go in the big 16" pots. I planted them in there and that is where we are today! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Good job Dustin!! Those plants look great. It sounds like you were very vigilant in your care of the young plants. The next thing to watch out for are (suckers) they are leaves that will start to grow at the base of almost every leaf. Just pinch these off, they rob the good leaves of much needed nutrients. They will come back again and again. Check your plants often. If you have any questions let me know.
I finished planting my crop tonight. 180 plants so far I might set out another row 45 more plants I'm not sure yet. I'll post some pics in a few days. Does anyone else have pics or a story they would like to share?

Carl,
You need to start your seeds in late February early March. It takes between 7 and 21 days for the seeds to germinate. Then another 6-8 weeks before they are big enough to transplant outside. How far south in Texas is Amarillo? When do you have your first frost in the fall? If you would like some seeds pm me with your info and I'll get some seeds in the mail.
