OK, I've got a question....I've got several plants about the size of the last photo in Dustin's post above. Do you guys who've done this before start priming anytime or do you harvest all the leaves at once sometime later in the year. I've definitely got lots of leaves that could be picked now (not that I'm in any hurry), but if they are fine staying on the plants a while, I'll do that.

Dale,
Personally I don't start priming until after the plants bloom. After that it's up to you it can be done either way. If you wait until the leaves start to turn yellow the curing process won't take as long. Also if you decide to make maduro wrapper leaves they will ferment to a darker color if you allow the leaves to ripen. I believe that maduro means ripe. Also if you want to save some of the seeds for your crop next year let one of each variety you wish to keep bloom completely. you'll need to place a paper bag or cheese cloth over the flowers to keep them from cross pollinating. Or if you would rather I'll have plenty of seeds for next year. I hope this helps Dale. If I can be of further assistance just let me know.

Not sure how I missed this thread until now, but this is a neat project. I did the beer thing and grew my own hops, so maybe this is a new project for next season. Can't wait to see how things turn out for everyone growing a crop!!

Outstanding info, thanks for the asistance! I was just afraid the leaves may get too mature, but it sounds like that's not a problem for quite a while yet.

I really need to get a couple of the books you suggested, looks like it's time to do that!

Time for an update! I harvested my first priming of some Connecticut Broadleaf and thought I'd share a pic or two. I took the bottom 4-5 leaves off of 4 plants, and plan to do the same every 7-10 days now until they are done. Also starting to plan how to ferment them. Right now they are hanging in my garage drying in tied bunches and they look so kewl!

I'm having so much fun with this that next year I may just have to move up to a full size garden plot with up to 100 plants.

Wow Dale, looks like you've got it under control. Is this a neat hobby or what? Did you get the kiln plans from seedman.com? It is almost a two foot cube, if you use that one and don't have enough tobacco of each variety to fill it I think you could mix the different tobaccos by layering them at 90 degree angles to each other.

I'll post some pics of mine tomorrow!

Hey Dustin, how about some pics of your crop?

Thanks Brian.....I think.....:imconfused:

I should have had my photographer focus in closer on the tobacco! However, I'll take the compliment! Makes a 50 yr old guy like me feel like all the sit-ups and working out is worth it.
