Desktop Humi Woes
So, I have been using the beads for about 6 months now, and I'm pretty religious about checking the saturation and all that. My wife bought me this humi from Tampa Humidors fro my b-day. Nice looking (the humidor, dummies), looks well constructed, etc. I seasoned it per Tampa Humidor, but the humedistat never read above 40 or 50. I used the salt water technique to check the operation, and the needle really never moved. It has a screw in the back, but when I turned it the whole face turned not the needle. I said the hell with it and bought the beads and forgot about it. Before the beads, I used the gear that came with the unit for the first few weeks.
Now, I'm making a coolerador because I'm addicted to cigarbid, and I decided I'd buy a couple digital hygrometers. They came with the test kit, so I got them all adjusted to read correctly. I threw one into my bead-run desktop and low and behold I'm running at 50%, even with a properly wet 70% puck. What's going on, guys? I live in Arizona so I know the air seeks out moisture and robs it from my humidor every time I open it up, but can it be that bad? Is it possible that pre-beads the cedar dryed out and needs to be re-seasoned? Does the humistat read differently when it's mounted on the top of the box? All these questions have me spinning. I erally thought I'd be able to throw the puck in there and forgeta bout it. HELP |

You have to first make sure there is enough beads for the the size of your humi. Measure your humi and go here. Once you know you have enough try re-seasoning your humi and see if that works.

I live in Arizona as well, and I have found I had to use a humidification device rated for a humidor bigger than mine to get it to stay around 70%. My humidor isn't exactly top of the line, but it does seem to seal well, so I don't know why the rh drops so quick; must be Arizona.

I would bet that one puck just isnt enough. The thing with beads is you can't over do them. I would do what Dozer said.

Are you sure you don't have a leak in that new humi? Never known beads to fail. Sure, you could put in twice as much, but if there is a leak in the seal even that may not be enough.

Thanks for the advice, boys. For my cooler I bought a lock-down marine cooler and 16 oz of beads. I have enough beads to go around, so I will try Dozer's advice. If it's not panning out, I can add more beads to the desktop. Or maybe just get a new humi. I could always use it as a drybox, too. If I have been smoking 50% stogies all this time, maybe I won't like the wetter ones anyway, who knows.
