i definitely take price into account. Being in college with a low budget for stoges, the price point is pretty important to me. If i can get a $5 cigar that tastes just like, or shares similar tastes/characteristics, of a $15 cigar I would give the higher rating to the cheaper one. Im more inclined to give cigars a better rating for a better "bang for the buck".

Whenever I review a cigar wither officially or not, I always take the label off and try not to know the price ahead of time. I rather try to guess the price based on the quality of the smoke.

I'll typically be MORE impressed with a 3 to 5 dollar stick that knocks my socks off than a 10 to 20.00 stick that does same...hell, I EXPECT a stick that costs that much to knock my socks off, so, yeah, I guess I'm harder on the top shelf stuff.

I agree. If a pay an assload of money for a stick, it better be good. If it isn't, then I definitely have reservations about that line of cigars in general.

I gotta go with number 2. As an engineer, I know anything is possible with enough money and enough time but, making something work on a limited budget is genius!!!

One would have to.
I just finished telling someone who is looking for a special cigar to celebrate fathers day with and had both the PAM and GOF recommended to him that, although even I agree the GOF is better, the price difference is not warranted.

The bottom line is that taste/experience are independent of a cigar's price. Rate each as if it had been given to you free of charge...
BUT... there is something to be said for a cigar's value. IMO value should be a separate consideration from experience, but a consideration nonetheless. A cigar review without mention to the value of the cigar is therefore incomplete, in most cases. |

I would say that I kind of mix the two rules up a bit. In my mind I truly can't exclude the price of the cigar from my mind. I usually smoke it and think about everything included in that and whether I really liked it or not. Then I think about the price and try and equate whether I liked it enough to be willing to pay that price again.

Generally, I tend to take price into account with the cigar I smoke. If its a great cigar for a decent price, it will rate higher generally.

I go by the cigar - but price and ratings help. For an example - Davidoffs from the Dominican Republic are one of the most expensive cigars. If we want to go by price - Davidoffs should be the best cigar out. Davidoffs are consistantly ratee 86-88 - I agree with these ratings. They are a good cigar - buy not worth the money asked for them. I may buy a box of davidoffs if they were selling for $65-75 but not more. So amount paid does not make the cigar. I would rather have a box of Pepin Garcias "fumadores" at $50. a box. The pepins have more body - more flavor and worth twice the amount asked.
The cigar is what makes me want a box, the prices is less important. |

I know I often think of the price - especially if it is either a cheap or expensive stick.
If it's cheap and not that good, fuggit, if it's expensive and no good than I get a little annoyed. Not happened that often thankfully! |

The only time price comes into play is when I'm in the UK at one of the cigar auctions of rare vintage smokes. I tend to keep my AMEX card under lock and key but somehow that darn thing always comes out.

#2, for sure. Where is the motivation to buy a $15 dollar stick when you can find a $6 one that is equally good?

So there definitely does appear to be a lot of disagreement on this topic.
On the show, we are going to continue our practice of listing the pros and cons of each cigar we smoke and then let you know what we thought of it. We definitely take cost into account when deciding if the cigar is something we would recommend. that said, we will make sure we do a more thorough job of discussing what we think about the cigar absent the price, and only at the end, sum it up with the price.
