Do you consider the price when you rate a cigar in your mind?

Okay, so here is a touch question. There seem to be two schools of thought with respect to how people "rate" cigars in their minds.

School of thought #1:

A cigar is an experience and should be enjoyed without consideration of the price. You should rate it on how good a smoke it is and not try to put "value for the money" into the equation.

School of thought #2

Cost of the cigar is a factor in determining how much you like a cigar. A cigar might be a dynamite smoke at $8, but at $16 it stinks on ice. A value based smoker considers the experience but weights it against the price.

Which school of thought do you subscribe to? I kind of lean to #2 myself.

I agree with you. One of my favorite habanos is a Partagas Coronas Senior. It is not the best habano, but it is consistently good and flavorful and when you buy them by the box, they are about $5.

nope not for me. if i buy an expensive cigar, i would expect it to preform well. i think some brands are overpriced and function just as well as lower priced cigars. its almost like your paying for the name

I rate a cigar on its own merit, not by the price someone has attached to it. I've had some less expensive sticks that were well constructed and had a copious amount of flavor throughout. I've had some more expensive sticks that I had to scratch my head and wonder if some one broke the sticker price gun! If its a good smoke, then its a good smoke. The fact that it may be less expensive is a bonus!

I agree with school of thought #1. Although when I smoke a cigar that is 15- and it sucks I say to my self "thats more like a 5- cigar". When reviewing a cigar, price does not matter. It should not matter.

Good ideas... I would have to say that I tend to go by both schools of thought...at times.

I would say I generally lean towards School #1 - a good cigar is a good cigar regardless of price. However, you always have higher expectations when you pony up the $$$ for a more expensive stick and if it sucks, the let-down is greater.

It doesn't really come into my mind when judging the taste but when it's over and it's bad I often get pissed if it was really expensive.

If I'm reviewing a cigar, I try not to think about the price. I try to review it as is. Once the review is done the price of a cigar will determine whether I will buy another or whether I think the cigar is worth the cost. For example if the cigar was an average smoke but value priced might mean it is a good every day cigar, but an average cigar at a high price might mean I would never buy it again.

There are so many really good cigars out there that a high priced good cigar might mean it is a poor value given a lower cost equally good cigar. Of course, there are some high priced cigars that are well worth the money for special occasions.

Price does play a part to some extent. If I'm justing the TASTE of the cigar, no it doesn't. It is a factor if I'm judging the VALUE of the cigar? Yes, by all means it is.

it depend (for me anyway) how I want to rate the cigar. The most fair way for flavor is to do it blindly, but for myself I liek to take into account the price. There are many many $10+ sticks out there that I do not consider a cigar good enough to be worth that, and there are $3-$5 sticks that are very good, and if you have a smoke that is great and wont break the bank i do hold them in higher regard than a cigar that is comparable and $5 more. Then again I am a poor college kid so price does play a huge part of what i can and cannot smoke haha

I just want a good cigar ,the price is secondary to me ,i do not want to pay big bucks for a dog rocket. So i usually listen to what the vets here recommend and have not been dissapointed yet on there choices on a high dollar stick.I only buy a high dollar stick if others give it the thumbs up.Then i can decide for my self if it was worth the dead presidents.Today i am going to get a higher dollar cigar on the recommendation of others her on the forum 100 Anos heard they were good,so i will see.Just my 2 cents.
