Cigar Art Project...

I decided I'd share my latest project with my fellow Gorillas.. I am going to be documenting my art project of turning a small oak box into a nice humi, with different bands being glued to the outside. My goal is to not have a single band on there that is a duplicate. Here's what Ive got so far.. The top is done, and Ive now started on the front. I plan on lining the inside with cedar, and maybe building a seperating shelf for it as well. Here's some pics of the progression:
Here's what I started with, just the bands I had laying around:

And here's some more progression pics:

The lid, all done:

The start of the front:

And a current pic of the front:

I plan on covering every side in bands, with no band being a duplicate, as I mentioned above.. then when thats done, I will cover the whole thing with decopauge to protect the bands from wear and tear.. Then I will line the inside with cedar, and throw in some beads and a hygrometer... Interested to know what my fellow gorillas think...

Re: Cigar Art Project...

Indeed, a cool idea. You could even put your own 'date stamp' on the bottom!

Re: Cigar Art Project...

Love it !!!!

I'm doing the same thing in a way. Putting mine in frames to hang on wall.
The ultimate compliment is the "wifey" telling me she likes it !!

The hardest thing I found is the "duplication" !! But when you think about all the different brands you'll end up trying.........it's kinda neat !! Keep up the good work ! Oh....b.t.w. I also add the box bands/seals too !! It kinda gives it a different perspective !!

Can't wait to see it finished !! Keep the pics coming.......

I thought about putting mine in frames, but I have nowhere that the wife would allow me to hang it! Luckily for me, Im the king of Cbid 5 packs, so finding enough smokes to try, in order to keep the bands from being duplicates, is not as hard as it looks!

Re: Cigar Art Project...

That is really Cool man. I love it.
Got a bunch (meaning a couple cigar boxes full) of bands. Been thinking of an idea along those lines. Being a woodworker in my past, I plan to make the Box myself, and because I love fine wood, I don't think I will completely cover mine, but If I make a big enough box, I can use a lot of bands just doing the edges.

Will look forward to the finished product pics. So far it looks awesome.

Well, although it passed approval to hang in the house....I opted to hang it in the garage. Of course there are 5(?) frames out there...all diferent sizes. They are on one corner of garage. PM me your addy.....might have a few xtra bands you might like.

Re: Cigar Art Project...

Very nice! You should list the bands you don't have so that some of us that might have them can send them to you. I don't save my bands but it would give me an excuse to smoke a few and drop them in the mail.

Re: Cigar Art Project...

What a great idea! I have a well-working humi that isn't cosmetically special. I've been gathering my bands in coffee mugs.

I like the idea that no two bands should be the same.

Also, it's better for bragging and describing your work if you've actually smoked them all.

Any idea among the woodworkers here if the decoupage will adversely affect the humi? I can't imagine so, since it's a well-functioning humi's seal that is the most critical part.

I may copy this idea.

Re: Cigar Art Project...

very kewl idea Scott!! Frank has a bunch under a piece of glass on his side of the room. The trouble with that is he's pretty klumsy and has spilled soda and coffee out, then has to put down new bands for the ones that he ruins..LOL

We don't have any trouble with smoking more to get more bands though.
