A little OT: Jaw Pain

Hey guys, I've been suffering with pain in my jaw (right side) for about 3 weeks now. And yes I've been to the Dr. he said it's (work) stress related as I'm clenching my jaw in my sleep. He said take some anti inflammatory and relax. The sad thing is I relax with a cigar, but after a while of smoking a cigar my jaw is sore. I don't keep the cigar in my mouth while smoking either.

I've gone to my dentist and they recommend a bite plate, so they took a mold. I got one at Walmart and it works ok but triggers my gag reflex and I can't sleep with it. Anyway I go see the Dentist again on Monday, hopefully the plate is in. My jaw has gotten better with meds, but it still hurts. It's not my mouth or teeth either, just my jaw.

Any suggestions? If this doesn't go away it will really impact my cigar smoking.

I had something similar a few months ago, and it was traced down to me "retrohaling" too much (I have had a bite plate for years.) I stopped cigars for a couple weeks, and only retrohale once or twice a cigar, and things are okay now.

Anything allergy related? When my sinuses get F'd up, my jaw kills me. it's usually only on one side and it could be bottom or top.

Nope no allergies. I hope it's something that will eventually go away. I always get the feeling when going to the Dr. that they are just guessing. 9/10 times I get the same answer from the Internet and it doesn't cost me a co-pay and and hour or so of my time.

My wife works in dentistry (28 years) and says your dentist should be able to make a night guard for you. It sounds like your grinding your teeth and that could have some long term effects if it goes untreated.

or

you could just change your name and move to the Bahamas and sip drinks and smoke cigars every day...I'm no doctor but I think that may stop you from grinding your teeth.

Yeah, my dentist said I was grinding my teeth too and that the enamel was getting worn down. He asked if I have frequent headaches (which I did) which he attributed to the nighttime teeth grinding. (I thought he was full of BS.) But I got the fitted night guard from the dentist and it sure did help with the headaches. Took a couple of weeks to get used to, though. I'm quite sure that the more stress you carry, the more you're clinching and grinding your teeth without even knowing it.

BTW, I had gotten one of the OTC bite plates too and it was way obtrusive and cumbersome. The personalized one from the dentist is a thousand times better. Hope you get some relief soon, Matt.

I bought an old football style mouthpiece, trimmed it really small, and then molded it like they instruct on the packaging and that worked great for a long time.

By retrohale, if you mean exhaling thru the nose, that is total BS, it has nothing to do with it. Most likely a dental or nerve problem in the jaw.
