Smoking after oral surgery

I had a molar extracted today that turned into full blown oral surgery when both roots broke off in the jaw and then there was a massive amount of infection in the bone. The 10 minute procedure turned into an hour of friggin pain. It hurt like hell.

I'm advised not to smoke for 5-7 days after surgery to help avoid dry socket. Has anyone ever had oral surgery and smoked a day or two later and had any problems? I have a herf this weekend and will definatly be smoking there.

I smoked 3 days after they extracted one of my teeth. They told me to wait at least 2 days and I waited 3, just to be sure. No ill effects, and I still have that hole in my mouth!

Don't do it!!!!! You risk getting dry socket and you do NOT want that...you will be out longer. If you need the gory details I can get my wife in here and she can write all the crap that it entails. Just suck (no pun intended) it up for this weekend.

Never had oral surgery just a fill and smoked the same day. They didn't tell me not to.

I went through a quadruple extraction last month...AND THERE IS NO WAY I WAS GONNA RISK IT. For anyone that hasn't had them or known someone that has....dry sockets is no friggin joke! During a tour in Korea I had to take my roommate to the ER for a pain shot.....a grown man crying like a baby..and he wasn't any pansy either. My vote is stay off the sticks as long as the doctor suggests, rinse with warm salt wter for days after the extaction, don't use a straw at all (the vacuum suction leads to drying the socket) and do anything else the doc recommends.

Good luck.

By the way...I had no issues and was back in business on day six with no ill impacts. Think how awesome that first cigar will be.

I'll wait until Saturday, which will be day 5. I don't want any bad experiences. I was told to rinse with salt water many times a day and drink a lot of water. Also, no spitting.

Hope it all goes well for you after 5 days. I had dry socket over the Christmas holidays a couple of years ago. Dentist came in at 10pm to pack it, knowing how much pain I was in. I would much rather have my manhood squeezed in a vise for a day than have dry socket. OMG! Just use caution in deciding.

I have had enough to know that it is not worth it--A guy I work with smoked and the pain put him out of work for a week--So if you think it was painful during the surgery--its nothing compared to a DRY SOCKET--my 2c.

The idea is to avoid creating a vacuum in your mouth, which can dislodge the clots that form to begin the healing process. Enough people have said it already, but I'll add my "amen" to the statement: "You do NOT want dry sockets!"

5 days should be adequate, but puff GENTLY.

Having met Rob now, at our local B&M yesterday, I can tell you that if he was hurting, it MUST be bad!

As a 12 cigar a day smoker I have always found it hard to follow the post extraction rules :mumbles: on the other hand, after three go arounds with dry socket I strongly urge you to listen to your oral surgeon.
BTW- I used to think "Dry Socket" was a nickname for an OLD hookeribble:

I just had oral surgery as well. I'd advise NOT to smoke if you can.....However, if you're like me and can't keep gauze over the infected or sore area. Seemed to work for me. Smoked a cigar 2 days after getting 28 teeth removed and never got dry socket.

BUT EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT

I'm good for the 5 days and called the doc today to ask if Saturday was alright and he said I'd be fine. I haven't had any pain at all and slept through the night just fine...without the 500mg of Vicoden he prescribed. I've never taken a pain pill, other than Aleve or Tylenol, and don't plan on starting now.
