planning ahead
the chit-chat on the 'saving for a special occasion' thread has got me to thinking...
it occurs to me that I should consider what cigar might be a good choice for an 'up and coming' special occasion that I'll be having later next year - come November 27th of 2009, I'll be celebrating the big 5-0 I suppose the 'obvious' choice would be an embargo year cuban, since that also happened 50 years ago, but the chances of laying hands on that without breaking the bank are probably pretty slim - I want something I'm going to enjoy, I'm not after a 'prestige' stick now, I guess I could wait and just grab whatever... but, I might as well take advantage of this opportunity and get something sooner, so I can put it in the humi and rest it well for the occasion ![]() that being the case, the question is what? also curious as to your reasoning for the "why" ![]() |

I would agree with Brent! Do you have a favorite? I know lots of people tell me that they smoke so many different brands that they don't have one. Go with "Your" old faithful.

Get yer favorite cigar until now and stick it into the humi. By November next year, it will have aged neatly.

Heck, snag a Cuban Davidoff or Dunhill - IF you can find one.

only problem is, I'm so new to this that I don't really have an idea for what I'd like it to be... still working on deciding what is my 'favorite' :mumbles: oh well... I guess I'll come up with something sooner or later |

Smoke a proven favorite......Padron Anni 1926 No. 6 would be a good choice in my book! There are alot of great non-cuban smokes out there. No need to break the bank!
Enjoy whatever you choose and Happy Birthday in advance! NWS |

There is nothing worse than buying a special stick that you've never had, putting it away, drooling over it for a year, and then lighting it up on that special day only to discover it's not your cup of tea. Happened to me with a very well-respected cigar I won't mention by name. The big day came, I was very disappointed, and promptly proceeded to fire up one of my favorites. Learned my lesson the hard way.

I'm voting for aging one of your favorites. I too have been disappointed by a new "special occasion" cigar before. No need to go through that on your special day!

You could buy something nice like an Opus or even a Padron Anniverisary and have your favorite smoke handy for back-up...

You don't need to break the bank to buy a pre-embargo cigar. I can send you the way of one of the most reputable dealers in the business and he will be very fair. I think you can get something for 60$ or so. Sure that's high for a cigar but it isn't gouging for what it is. PM me if you want to know.
Having said that, aged cigars, especially that old are somewhat of an acquired taste. They're not bad but they're different. I find that they are best enjoyed while also thinking about the history of them and the past 50 years or however old it is. With all that said, I wouldn't place all your hopes in one cigar. Make sure to have a backup or make it a 2 cigar night with one you are sure to enjoy. My $.02
