With a lot of companies (just to my taste), I feel like you can get a better cigar for less than a lot of the "super premiums". That being said, I also feel the ones that are more likely to pay for the "super premiums" are those that may be new to cigars, or only buy cigars whose names they recognize and think that anything they haven't heard of wont be better or as good. |

You must also factor which manufacturer makes his own cigars, which ones are simply distributors and which ones grow their own tobacco. Producing cigars is extremely labor intensive, not to mention how long it takes to actually turn a profit. By the time a cigar hits a shelf and you purchase it, that cigar could have been 3 years in the making. That's 3 years that your investment has literally been sitting. From the growing of the tobacco, the fermentation, the further aging after it was rolled, I always try to tell people we aren't dealing with keychains here.
Every true cigar smoker should at one point in their life be afforded the opportunity to visit a factory and see all the steps that are taken to complete a simple cigar. I guarantee that after you see this, you will never take a good cigar for granted. That being said, it does not justify over the top prices (I'll let you decide what that is) but you will no doubt appreciate the work it takes. |

Richard DiMeola, Executive V.P., CEO of Consolidated Cigar Corporation and President of the company's premium cigar subsidiary, Tabacalera de Garcia in the Dominican Republic. Generally, the biggest cost of a fine cigar is the tobacco, assuming packaged packed in the common box type. Fancy packaging can add greatly to the overall cost. Individual aluminum or glass tubes, polished and beveled cedar or mahogany boxes, gift selections of 5 or 10 cigars, etc. are very expensive and significantly increase the price per cigar. Prices varying greatly. Some cigars cost 8 or 10 times more than others of the same size. It's the smoker's dilemma to judge relative worth. Price of an object can affect our psyche and attitude toward it. Practice caveat emptor and you'll be all right.
