Ciagrs from the Dominican Republic
My good friend is heading to the Dominican Republic at the end of the month and offered to bring me back a few smokes if I wanted. What should I tell him to keep an eye for that might be unique?

BUYER BEWARE! There are soooo many knockoff cigars sold there that I would be hesitant to buy anything. If you know that he has a very keen eye, then maybe, but only buy from very reputable shops.

Would there be something there that I can't get here? I really have been enjoying the Arganese that I picked up last week. So far I've had the Double Wrap, the ML, and the Maduro Presidente.

You cant purchase Dominican cigars in the DR unless they are exported and imported back in witch would probally double the price. You are better off buying them right here at home!!!

Good to have that bit of info, thanks. Maybe a Cuban but it seems pretty risky to have someone who knows even less than I do about 'em try to spot a fake.

LOL he's not the one going. i actually got some cigars from a friend who had been to the dominican, as far as i can tell they are an ecuador wrapper with domincan filler, they are nothing special, i imagine most cigars there that cant be found in the us cant be that good

I've been to DR twice in the past couple of years and have found the prices and selection to be best right here at home. I would recommend stopping by some of the manufacturers if you get to Santiago. Many are very willing to give tours and samples.
Also, if you really want a cuban, just go into some of the shops along the back streets and you can actually watch someone make a "Cohiba". Seriously, I would not touch anything that claims to be from Cuba. |

Yeah from what I have heard from herfing buddies that have visited the only cigar stuff worth doing there is checking out the factories other than that they said it was better to bring cigars if you plan on going instead of getting them there (unless of course you were getting some fresh rolled ones from a factory).

It sounds funny, but yes cigars made in the DR are for export. My brother went there last year, and he said he would have been better off to buy a few cigars at home and to have brought them with him. The few cigars he did bring back were a brand made for the resort he stayed at.
FWIW: you won't find "real" Cuban cigars there...they don't import them. |
