NOOO......!!! StogieNubber ISOM Mishap

OK Chuck, you asked me to report both the good and the bad, so..........

First off, I really do like the Stogie Nubber. Cool little device. BUT!!!

Tonight, I decided to celebrate a little, and fire up my very FIRST ISOM ever!! The Montecristo #5 that was so thoughtfully gifted to me by a fine BOTL here. Believe me, I've been holding off lighting this up because I only had the one!

I was thoroughly enjoying it, and it started to get down a bit, so off to the StogieNubber to enjoy and savor every last little puff of this fine cigar!

Poked in the nubber and the dang thing SPLIT on me!!! Did you guys on the East coast hear me scream?!!

Man, talked about bummed! I tried to pinch it back together, hold my fingers over it, wrap my lips way up on it, but it was no use.

I don't know why this happened, but it does concern me quite a bit. It wouldn't have been a big deal really if it had of been any other cigar.

Maybe it was due to the size of the cigar, I don't know, but I do think I will be a little leery of using it on any other special cigars, at least for a while.

Any ideas why this would happen. Any one else had this happen? I'm just bummed. I might try to put another piece of wrappr on the little guy, just cause I hate to see any of it go to waste.

That sucks. If you have one with just a little peel try some honey. It will stick it back down and stop the leak. Sorry to see your mishap.

Thats a shame Was it the nubber that did this or was it the construction of the cigar/placing of the nubber on the cigar that made it split? Thats some serious damage...

Don't think it was construction of the cigar. It was a really nice looking cigar. No big veins or anything. Hard to say, but Erica said she heard it POP when I stabbed the cigar.

Sounds like the wrapper was tight, I'll give an example... have you ever stabbed a piece of boxing tape with a pen and with that one stab the whole thing breaks off? That's because there's a lot of tension. It sounds like the master rollers in Havana roll these things tight so the boxing tape theory comes into effect there. I'm not convinced it's a flaw with the nubber, its just the wrapper rolled tight.

Maybe I'm wrong, just giving out ideas

No no, not a flaw with the nubber. really, how can it possibly be flawed? Just perhaps not the best thing to use on all cigars. If that picture can be zoomed in enough (low res for posting) you can actually see the binding is split too. It looks like it was cut with a razor blade.

Perhaps built up gasses in the cigar, and it popped like a balloon?! Although, the pre-split draw was perfect.

Just a weird thing to have happen. These things have a way of happening to me.

That's an interesting idea... I wonder if tobacco lets off gasses without fire to it, like high room temperature or something encouraging the release of tobacco gas... That would explain it if theres something that documents tobaccos giving off gas. If there is a gas, I would think it would be between the wrapper and binder...

Looks to me that maybe you tried to put the nubber on to soon for one thing, maybe you can have enjoyed it further down before trying to use it. But I guess anytime you are trying to poke something thru the wrapper you are playing with fire.

Not a knock on the nubber but to me anytime a cigar gets to hot to hold, for me its also to hot on my lips, and the smoke, for me to keep smoking. So I wouldn't use one anyway.

I wonder if that bad boy was a little too Hot and thats what caused the POP! I think the wrapper like many here have said got tight and the combination of the heat and wrapper caused your mishap---Let er cool down a bit maybe next time and see what happens.

You stabbed a beetle and it exploded

I haven't jumped on a nubber yet because I was worried about this happening.

One thing I think I will do, is file the tip of the nubber round. The nail tip that it has now, being faceted, may have contributed to the split. Perhaps making them with a nice smooth, round needle type tip might work better.

From whats said I think it is just pure bad luck. I use a toothpick on my cigars when I nub them and never had a problem, so cant see why the nubber would do that. but it definately sucks that it happened on your first ISOM!!

Possibly the wrapper was dried out--when you started the smoke was it hard as a rock and possibly brittle(fragile) or was it humidified properly???
