Be grateful that you do not have the genetic makeup that gives you allergic reactions.

If they are genetic then my do people do fine for many years then all of the sudden have bad allergies?

Sometimes as with Asthma, it will show up early in life as a child, or late in life as an adult. As we get older our immune systems weaken, and we become more susceptible to cold etc, and our bodies start changing. As an example, as an adult I developed skin allergies, which I did not have as a child. This was genetic for me. My brother also developed this same allergy as an adult.
I am talking about allergic reaction, which is a inflammation process that can affect deferent parts of the body. People with allergies become super sensitive to things than not allergic people are not affected by at all.
This is not the same as a response due to something that is caustic to the system, such as smoke. Although smoke does bother many people with asthma. The osmotic will more sensitive to small amounts that the non asthma person. A non osmotic may or may not react to the smoke, depending on their constitution. Some people just have stronger systems that others.
I knew a old lady that smoked until she was 93. I also know people who smoke, and have bad lung disease at 50. The difference was; the old lady had a stronger constitution than the 50 year old.
Anyway back to your question - our bodies change as we get older, and what may bother us now may not have bothered us as children.

Bill, thanx for that clarification. I was going to ask about asthma and the inconsistensies in contracting it. I still think no PB&J is unAmerican tho!

I have pretty bad allergies. Pretty much allergic to anything outside. I have severe Rhinitus that flares up whenever I smoke. I pretty much can't breathe very well after enjoying a good cigar. My nightly regimine is Brushing, Neti Pot, and Mouth wash to try and flush my system of anything that could aggravate it at night.

Growing up I had a mild allergy to grass as my skin would severely itch after rolling around in it, but no sinus issues until later in life. Guess I came from the shallow end of the gene pool.

Allergies are genetic and cant be helped. But I do agree that we are weakening our kids by over protecting them.

Wow - there's lots of views on this. I'm glad I could spark up a good conversation.

The only thing that really chaps my ass when it comes to nut allergies is how it's always described by the media as an epidemic. It's only 8% of children! Even though it's doubled according to WebMD, that's not an epidemic. And, I'm not going to call banning PB&J un'Murican, but I will say that economically speaking, you're taking a valuable nutritional tool out of the box for many parents struggling financially. Peanut butter is one of the cheapest forms of protein available. The best solution, I think, is stricter regs against cross contamination. As someone who's worked in the food industry for quite some time, that's pretty easy to implement. As far as kids bringing PB sandwiches to school, maybe larger schools could have a 'nut house club' and have separate lunch times or seating?

Maybe the medical folks can dispel or support this idea - do you think the higher instances of nut allergies in kids is tied to the diet of pregnant mothers? What I mean is, in the 90s, mothers were advised to shy away from many different foods. Are we now seeing the results of children not exposed to potentially problem foods while in the womb? Or is it - and please don't take offense when I say this, I'm not saying it's a bad or good thing - because with modern medical advances, natural selection for humans has pretty much been outdone?

Just a curious SoTL, waxing philosophical...

Yes I agree on no PB&Js - just had 2 to day. I am glad that I don't have a peanut allergy. (or smoke sensitivity)

Great thread topic. I am never sick "knock on wood"; nor is my brother. Our parents were not neat freaks, and were too busy working to sanitize anything. We both live in a small condo at college that is usually a mess; we party hard and get little sleep. I thanked my mom for letting me live life not worried about germs and bugs.

I never ate dirt, only dog food.

My parents weren't neat freaks either - although I did eat dirt once.

Allergies are genetic and inherited from your parents. Exposing yourself or your kids to substances will not keep them or yourself from becoming allergic to the substances. Doing this can actually cause an onset of allergies to the substance you have introduced, IF your body has a natural aversion to it.

Check out this link......

http://www.webmd.com/allergies/guide/basics-1

I have severe allergies to TONS of stuff both environmental as well as food allergies. I have had them my entire life.

Ok...(gets on high horse), this is a long and complicated subject. I am only going to tackle one cause of why Americans (cause it happens to us more then anyone in the world, and other developed countries are catching up to us as they become more Americanized) are getting sicker and sicker every year. It is the food supply, and by food I mean food, water, medicine, bath soap, anything we put in our mouth or on our skin. They're are so many toxins in our food that they slowly, and sometimes not so slowly build up and begin to poisen us. Take tap water, it's poisen!!! They put in chlorine and flouride into it!!!! That does not even take into account all the stuff that their purification process doesn't take out like antibiotics, feces, hormones... Chlorine kills the bacteria in the water they say... ok well then what does it do to bacteria in your digestive system? Most of which you actually want there!!!! Flouride, is pure poisen to your body and among the many things it does do to you is supress your putietary gland ( I know it's spelled wrong). Now that gland is HUGE in regulating hormones in your body, among those hormones are weight controlling chemicals. Add to that all the processed food that Americans eat and it is no wonder why we are an obese nation.
I am going to stop my rant short, and end with saying that if you want to be healthy and very, very possibly clear up some alergies or even many diseases, eat a balanced organic diet and drink either natural spring water, or water purified by reverse omosis. Also a good book to read would be "Natural Cures" by Kevin Treadue (SP). You would be amazed at how America is literally killing itself with our food.

I've seen that book advertised on TV often and have wondered about it. Sounds like it might indeed be a good read...
