Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

All depends on the person and the smoke, if it's really good I'll smoke it till my fingers burn and if it sucks then I could very easily throw most of the cigar away if it's bad enough. Never predetermine how much of a cigar you will smoke because you will only be selling yourself and sometimes the cigar short.

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

I just laid down a CAO criolla after maybe 1/2 inch, flavor just did not suit me. I will always give em a little chance, but if it ain't workin for me then the heck with it. I have too many reliable good smokes to waste my time with a stinker.
On the other hand, sometimes I smoke em till I just cannot hold it any longer without smokin my thumb. Some are that good.
Seems to me like Zino is trying to sell more sticks; guess I am a brute, but it is my money.

If I were a wealthy man, I'd buy only 7 inch cigars and only smoke half.

He quotes Zino Davidoff as saying "A gentleman smokes a cigar only to mid-length, and only a brute smokes it down to a third.".

I personally relish the last third of most cigars,

Does anyone here do this?

Does anyone here even know anyone who does this?
When I first started smoking cigars and got into the hobby, I read a lot about it. I read an excerpt in a book about proper cigar etiquette, and read the saying you quoted above...Zino Davidoff may have said it but, he didn't originally coin the phrase. I read it and thought about it some, and figured that may have been the norm in "polite society" a hundred years ago but, nowadays, the price of a good cigar has quadrupled and, IMO the best part of a cigar is at the halfway point. Indeed, most cigars are constructed with varying stages or transitions from beginning to end.

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

I may be a newb to this, but like others have stated, I smoke until it is no longer enjoyable. If that means bad taste, too much heat, or too much smoke in the eyes... I'll just lay that bad boy down. Many cigars approach the cost of a movie ticket. Yet, just because I plunked down $7-$10 doesn't mean I need to stay through the credits. Or even after 10 mins!

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

Yeah I think I have read that the whole half cigar thing was something they did in Cuba and high society back 40 years ago or whatever.

I don't think it applies at all anymore...except to the old farts.

I'm no gentleman. I never have been; nor will I ever be. I don't smoke with the band on because it's rare that I lay down a cigar that isn't just ash and cap. I go until I can't hold onto the thing anymore. I just can't put it down, this rod of wonderful aromas and flavors that I've developed a love for. Even if the experience changes for the worse, I'll stick it out. It's like a marriage. When the going get bitter and sour, you can't very well cast a wife or husband off, now, can you...or can you...

First of all, welcome to the jungle! (am I even allowed to do that since I've been here less than 2 months myself )

Second, I tend to try to "stick it out" with a less than perfect smoke, but I don't compare it to marriage. It's more like having a girlfriend, you CAN get out of it if things really start turning for the worse. Just my

This is the way I am. I have had some that were just OK until the last third. Sometimes if a cigar gets unenjoyable early I will just do my best to keep it burning to see if the end of the cigar is better.

Zino was missing out if he only smoked 1/2 of all his cigars.

That's what I'm saying. I'm like the majority here, I'll nub it if it's good and trash it if it's not. I always give a cigar at least an inch of ash before I chuck it though.

Would it change your mind if you had a cooler in the garage with a couple hundred more women stashed at regulated temperature and humidity?

Brrrrrr... it doesnt bear thinking about.

As for the original question, I'm with the brutes. I'll usually take a cigar down way past the band and if I don't nub it it's because it went out when it was too short to relight.
