Smoke Half the Cigar

Read an article by John Vogel of Tabacos de la Cordillera, http://www.tabacordillera.com/how-to...uban-cigar.htm who promotes smoking only the first half of a cigar. The gist of his message is that last half of a cigar is no good and stinks.

He quotes Zino Davidoff as saying "A gentleman smokes a cigar only to mid-length, and only a brute smokes it down to a third.".

I personally relish the last third of most cigars,

Does anyone here do this?

Does anyone here even know anyone who does this?

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

I smoke my cigars till they are no longer enjoyable. Some time is midway, some times it is to the nub. And I have had a few that I ditched in the first half inch.

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

I'm with Stacey, as long as I'm enjoying the smoke, I'll keep smoking. Howevr, if it turns on me at the midpoint, and it doesn't turn back after a few minutes, I have no problem laying it down. I never predetermine how long I'm going to smoke, but I have noticed that I don't smoke all that many cigars to the nub. There's usually an inch and a half of the cigar left when I put it down.

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

Im with Stacey (not just because he is a gun crazed redneck, i mean seriously have you seen his pics!!!)

some of my cigars will be sweet right down to burning my lips whereas others will develop an acrid taste maybe half to two thirds of the way down. if im not enjoying the flavour anymore then i will lay it down as otherwise it defeats the object of smoking a good stogie.

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

I think alot of this goes to etiquette. There is many customs as far as smoking goes from all around the world. Most of the Europeans will not leave a band on a cigar, as not to offend someone who cannot afford a higher end cigar.

I generally take them down to the band as a rule of thumb. Sometimes I take them down further, and sometimes I don't.

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

I agree with Stacey. I have had many cigars that are not very enjoyable for the first 1/3 and then really pick up and are excellent in the last third. Most of the cigars I enjoy I smoke down until I have nothing left to hold on to.

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

I smoke 'em down to the nub most of the time. For my tastes, the cigar gets better after the first ash falls off. I can't imagine throwing away the last 3 1/2 inches of a churchill.

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

Looks like we are (so far) all in agreement. I had a dozen or so cigar butts in my Stinky ashtray before I empied it yesterday. The varied from a barely smoked to the width of my thumb. I really depends on time, flavor, draw/burn problems, etc. If it starts to get bitter or harsh part way into the stick I will try to do a heated purge. This helps often, but if it doesn't I'll put it down.
I am a firm believer in life is too short to smoke a bad cigar.

Re: Smoke Half the Cigar

I usually smoke it down to the band.

As for the rest is it depends. If the cigar is good or if I have no other cigars around. I will definatley smoke the rest.

If my cigars are around and the cigar starts to suck or is plugged. It is a gonner.
