cigar ratings
I looked at the latest Smoke Magazine and knoticed that the ratings where mostly between 88 to 91, with hardly any above or below.
My question is, If most cigars are in this range - wouldn't it make these ciagars "average" You know "middle of the pack? It seems as if the bar should be raised since most cigars about the same rating. |

I don't pay that much attention to cigar ratings anyways. I've never seen any cigar get a score of 23 even if it was a nasty dog rocket with a crappy burn and mostly plugged and I've never seen a cigar score a 100. Most ratings score between 87 and 92 give or take not much. So, if there are no terrible cigars and no perfect cigars what's the point in rating them. Even if a cigar did score a 100 that doesn't mean that you'll even like it.

Maybe a rating system like - superior - average - below average - don't even think about it.

Me and my smoking buddies have a cigar ratings database we maintain. The lowest score is a 5.2 and the highest is a 9.27. It's located here: cigardb.augenstein1.com. It's hard to get lower based on the scale below. Most SHOULD be between 6 and 9.
We rating the appearance x 1, construction x 3 and taste x 6, based on the following scale. Rating scale: 10.0 - 9.5 = buy at any price 9.5 - 9.0 = premium price box worthy 9.0 - 8.5 = box worthy 8.5 - 8.0 = single or 5 pack worthy 8.0 - 7.0 = single worthy if dirt cheap 7.0 - 6.0 = will smoke if given for free 6.0 - 5.0 = suffer through if have to 5.0 - 4.0 = unsmokable 4.0 - 2.0 = would rather stick my head in a dirty toilet 2.0 - 0.0 = would rather stick my head in a dirty toilet with my mouth open |

it seems like the thing to have is a 90 or above rating, but it seems almost all major brands get this at least once from some professional cigar peridodical or website, so it doesnt mean as much anymore. personally i want to hear about what the profile of the cigar is which is why i like places like stogie review or keepers of the flame

The Ratings Dilemma
The problems with ratings are that full bodied smokers more that not rate medium and mild smokes lower. Mild to medium smokers do likewise with full bodied smokes. When you read the panel reviews from Smoke or other magazines you see this all the time. There are only a few smokers that I know that can really rate mild-full bodied cigars and not let their personal biases get in the way. What are the basics in rating a cigar for most of us It usually breaks down to these 1-construction 2-taste or flavor and 3-strength and finish. On construction, we want a cigar that draws well and burns even. On taste, tell us a description of the amount, the individual flavors if they can be discerned or if it is all pepper (not my favorite). On strength let me know how full bodied and how smooth and something about the finish. If we could get individual ratings on these variables we would be better off. It still wouldn't be objective but it would be a better explanation for others to focus on whether they want to try the stick. For me give me a stick that is beautifully constructed with good or great taste. The strength will be the determining factor on when in the day or with what I smoke the cigar. No matter how strong I want my smoke I always want it smooth.
