Smoked my first Opus-X tonight

I'm very impressed. It started smooth, got to a spicy flavor that wasn't just the tip of the toung or in the back of my cheeks but filled my mouth with a very pleasant, leathery, spicy, robust flavor. I have to say, I've never had a cigar that hit me quite like this. This is not a cigar I'd smoke regularly, but one that I'd look forward to on special occasions. It was the Opus-X #5 which is a small cigar, but it burned for an hour and 20 minutes. I think the humidity is too high in my humi so i'm going to make some adjustments to cure this. I'd have to give it a 92 to a 93 score. It was quite an experience. If it would have burned a little better, I'd score it even higher. I had to light one side A couple times to keep it burning perfectly. I was able to get an ash about 2 inches long. This is a hell fo a cigar. I can see why it has the reputation it has. One great smoke.

I would have to agree with you. Unless you really know how to experience the smoke, you might consider it to be stronger that you might like. It is very rich and full bodied. Not for the light weight.

Indeed, I fell victim to that effect myself.
Got one at a local B&M in Rotterdam because all those rave reviews had made me curious but it had too much of a kick to my taste.
In my experience it was not a bad cigar at all, but I wouldn't buy one again for the price I had to pay (34 euro, which is about 46 dollar).
I have enjoyed better smokes for a little less money.

Mind you, I have started smoking cigars only for about half a year now so you can probably blame my lack of proper respect for this cigar on that.

I smoked my first and only Opus X a month or so ago, courtesy of Mr. Tommy boy Martin, gentleman and scholar. I had never had any Dominican smoke that came close to that amount of sheer flavor. As much as I enjoy the Hemingway and Don Carlos lines, Opus X seems a different beast.

I smoked my first Ashton VSG yesterday, and was struck with the similarity in some of the basic flavors, spice, etc. Both are great cigars which would make any special occasion a spectacular occasion. Money being what it is, I'd have to go with the VSG for bang vs. buck.

Couldn't agree more! I'm still relatively new to higher end cigars and this one was definitely a little too much for me! I still have a few left that I'll hold onto and try again down the road. As for now, I'm still recovering from the butt-kicking that I got from the last one!

I find that most Opus that are green(fresh) need to be dry boxed a day or so.They tend to be shipped over humidified.Dry boxing them should take care of any burn issues.

Thanks for that tip. I've got 4 left but they'll be sitting for a while. I think the next time I'm going to smoke one, I'll dry box it for a day. It has a very dense tobacco inside so it'll hold humidity easily. You notice when you light it that the ash has a look all ts own.

I still have yet to smoke one, but I only have 2 to my name so they are being aged until further notice.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your first (I hear they're addictive though).
