The exact reason I put a natural gas 75,000btu unit heater in my garage.
Keep it at 55* all winter and bump the thermostat up to 65* when I go out for a smoke or to work on a car

using a space blanket or something, or build some kind of enclosure chair type thing if you can't build a shed. Have a heater going and your set. Just remember an opening to vent out smoke... It is like doing a tent except you can design it to a specific size that suits you. I like the firepit idea, I think I am going to make one...

Cheapest solution would be a couple of hot water bottles. To get things really on the cheap, answer me a few questions: do you already have at hand any portable heat generating equipment? A good one would be an old laptop - they get real hot sitting on your lap.
Some of the more industrious ideas I had, if you have a bit of engineer in you is to build a voltage stepper to plug one of your stove elements in to (if you have an electric stove). Better yet, you can de-construct a hair dryer, removing the fan and placing a reflector behind the heating element. Keep in mind the element wasn't designed for this, so further modifications may need to be taken. =) Those suggestions are the seriously cheap solutions I could come up with presuming you had that stuff laying around. Let me know if you have any other heat generators that you can think of and I'll put my 2 cells to some use. |

Move.
Every winter (especially since I've taken up cigars) I think about a warmer climate. You know close to the equator so every day is the same. ![]() Okay, I just woke up from a nice dream... I smoke in my car. It stinks in there but it's warm and my commute is about 35 min. There are tons of good short smokes now. I feel your pain and I've lived in Massachusetts my whole life.

Great suggestions... and some very creative ones. I think I have a couple packages I'll be putting together this weekend to send out. Thank you all for your suggestions!

Go to Lowe's or HomeDepot and buy some the rolled shade cloth. It is six feet wide and comes in many colors. Hang the cloth from the outside header. Cut the cloth on the corners so that you may roll up the cloth. What the cloth does is keep the heat on the patio. Plus you can roll it up during the nicer nights. I suggest the propane heater with two burners. I never used both burners only one. You have to have the right chair also. Any chair with metal will be cold. If you only have a metal chair, use a pad to insulate you from the metal;
If you want pics of my patio let me know

i duck hunt so i have used about every propane heat there is..the mr. heaters on the large bottle (2-3 burners) is what we use it heats a duck blind that is 30 feet long 10 feet deep. we hang a heavy tarp from ceiling to floor in the front of the blind and we cut the tarp every 10 feet and over lap it so you can step through it to get out on the shooting deck to shoot and get back in side if you are cold. we also get some of the old house wall heaters and convert it to propane..they work good and you can get the bigger bottles..you can get the tarp at an army surplus store nail it up and you can roll it up when you do not want to use it and drop it when you want to smoke.

First of all I feel ya T.J.
Here's what I do when the bitter cold comes around: I either smoke at the shop when I get a chance. Or, since I can't smoke in the house, I settle for the garage. I leave the Garage door partially open so the smoke can clear a bit, turn on the heater, and have a nice warm drink (mostly coffee). |

Are you hunting from a trailer house? Geez. I usually wind up sitting on a seat stuck in the mud in the swamp. Sounds like a good way to duck hunt and stay warm. Opening day starts this weekend and I'm ready.

I used to use my garage for my smoking room in the winters and then used this,,http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...rodid=11173501
They can be bought for about $60 now and this sucker is the best. Heats up in about a few minutes and wastes no energy at all. In fact, I use it in my house and my living room is 22 feet high and I don't even use my gas heat anymore. Turn this thing on and put the ceiling fan on low and voila',,,living room, kitchen, dining room, formal living room, and library are a toasty 73 degrees. In fact the wife tells me it gets too warm in the house on those nights where it is 30 degrees. My gas bill is $40 a month instead of the usual winters where it avg'd about $160 a month. Guess where I use the savings? That's right,,more cigars. Necessity is always the muther of friggin invention. Anyway, I use the garage, the heater and now I have my laptop where I can watch TV on it and get to see the games, TV shows that I missed during the week that you can see on all of the major Networks, or FX, and most of the other stations. It's a great thing and I also have my other fridge out there with drinks, etc. When it gets a bit too warm in the garage, vent it and you get fresh air. Garages, the next best thing to a man cave.

I'm in Chicago, and it was pretty cold here last Winter. I would sometimes use a walk to the grocery store as an excuse to light up.
Sometimes I would take a book with me, and sit on a low retaining wall, just outside the back door. I have a camping mattress, which I would fold once or twice, to make it thicker, and I put it under my derriere: I would just sit there and read. |
