Learning about ISOM's

Last weekend I had some time to talk with Paul the creator of Club Stogie. We talked about a bunch of cigars we both liked. One of the things I learned was how little I really know about ISOM's. Paul has a wealth of knowledge on them and can rattle off facts about them. It got me very interested in learning about them. Even if I can not smoke them until the embargo is lifted it makes me want to learn as much about them as I can.

It is a whole other world with real ISOM's and it seems like it will be alot of fun to learn about them. Many of the manufacturers I speak with on a daily basis say they simply can not wait until they can get into Cuba and play with the tobacco of places such as Pinar del Rio and other regions.

Do you want to learn more about them? Should we have some sort of section to discuss them? Your thought?

Alot of the manufacturers believe it will be lifted very soon. If it does lift then things are going to go crazy in the world of cigars here in the US.

I am thinking of maybe discussing one brand a day if we make a section for it. Then everyone can put info they know about that brand. Who knows we may even have some ISOM manufacturers chime in.

True, there are several brands, which are all produced by one manufacturer in different factories. The factories are not independent firms, they all belong to Habanos. So one brand may be produced in different factories at different times...

I think in order for me to grasp this concept it would mean I would need to discuss it directly with the people who make those cigars. Boat trip...

One myth that everyone seems to believe is that once the embargo is lifted, manufactueres will be able to goto cuba and get access to tobacco. INCORRECT. There is only so much cuban tobacco that is available. Habanos SA obviously has the strong hold, other manufactureres, such as Henry Wittermans (now owner of CAO) has used cuban tobacco in their mini cigar over seas and in Canada, they will continue to have access to that tobacco. Guys like litto, fuente, etc...will have to buy tobacco at auction (just like most of them do now) to gain access and use it for blending.

That would make any cuban CAO/hybrid CAO cheaper to make vs a cuban/hybrid made by someone else.

Brian don't forget about the problem of the names since altidis owns most of the names they run into the trademark laws once they try to sell the cigars in the US market.
