That's why my wife and I don't go to Dallas anymore. I understand that people who don't smoke have the right to be in a smoke free environment, but shouldn't that be the choice of the owner of the establishment? It's all a bunch of crap.

Highlights of proposed expanded smoking ban 12:00 AM CST on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 • Smoking prohibited in bars, billiard halls and any area within 15 feet of a business entrance. • Smoking remains legal in Dallas tobacco shops and cigar bars. • Fines changed from a $25 to $200 range to a flat $200 for violations. • Owners can be fined if they allow people to smoke inside an establishment where smoking is prohibited. • Affected businesses must post conspicuous no smoking signs. • Ashtrays are prohibited in Dallas businesses where smoking is outlawed. • The ordinance would go into effect April 10, although Mayor Tom Leppert said Friday that date may change if the ordinance is approved.

Still seems very silly to me.. This is the government meddling where they don't belong. It comes down to the owner of the establishment. It's their building. If they want to allow smoking, that is there choice. Unless the government is going to pay half of the mortgage on the place, they have no business telling them what LEGAL activities can take place in it.

It will suck if it passes (or should I say when it passes) but at least for now the Cigar shops and bars are safe!

Sorry for the delay in the post. This ordinance passed yeesterday and I had to talk to a few people before and after. First of all thanks for all the answers to my question. Dallas passed an ordinance banning smoking in all bars, hotel conference rooms and poolhalls. The exemption is Cigar Bars and cigar shops - so "Havana Social Club" is exempted and "grandfathered". This is the only way we could get exempted from the ordinance. So I guess we still have a couple of cigar bars in downtown Dallas. See you around when you come visit D.

Yeah it sounds a lot like the ban we have here SOBs! But at least you do still have the Cigar Bars and B&Ms you can smoke in. Lucky for me where I live its outside city limits.

Man, Houston and now Dallas are two unfriendly environments for cigar lovers of all kinds. We got red light cameras, a smoking ordinance and next up I heard from a local councilman that walking on the sidewalk and chewing gum will soon be outlawed along with men adjusting themselves in public!!!! So much for all the hip hoppers.
