I would say, "I'm sorry, but you chose to sit outside where smoking is allowed."

Hey, when in Rome. How would a native have responded? Take your key from those around you.

Dang! Just reading the responses is making it hard for me to wait a few more hours for a ride home with a La Aurora 1495.

So here is what we did. Actually since it was a lady and she asked all of us we actually put the cigars out. She was not mean and we had been smoking all day long anyway and it was time to eat. We were amongst good friends so we did not let it ruin our lunch.

NOW as soon as everyone finished we all forgot about the women and lite up cigars not even thinking about it. The women then dealt with the smoke until the check came and we all said our goodbyes to each other and left.

I would have waited till food arrived then I would have put it out. You had the right to smoke there and they knew that. Just because someone doesn't like your rights doesn't mean they should be able to remove it.

This is a tough situation though. they were nice about it. Had they been rude then the choice would have been obvious.

Ok so I was in Esteli, Nicaragua at Los Chiguetos restaurant in the heart of Tobacco country itself. I was there ordering food with about 8 guys and 2 of us were smoking when a crowd of ladies walked into the restaurant. We were actually seated on the patio of the restaurant were we would not disturb people with the smoke. The ladies middle-aged decided to sit at the table next to us.

Three minutes into them sitting down I could hear them talking in spanish about the smoke. The hands raised to cover the noses and they all began to make a fuss. They finally turned around and asked us in spanish to "Please PUT THAT OUT". Personally I was friggin shocked. The community we were in would be near to nonexistent if not for tobacco. I really could not believe they asked us to put it out.

Question: What would you say? Remember They asked nicely by saying PLEASE.
Stogie,
I have to say, I felt as strongly as the folks that voiced their feelings on the matter. That being said, your actions were absolutely appropriate for the situation.

Part of what has people on the warpath is inconsiderate smokers who smoke where they please (quite often in entrance ways to office buildings and such.....I say that because I was one who took that liberty to smoke at the entrance way when smoking was banned from in the office without regard for the feelings of those who had to pass through the area to go to work)

Your actions indicated that you were not the inconsiderate type of person who smoked there because they "could-period". Having shown her that consideration, it would not have been correct on her part to take issue with you lighting up after the meal was finished because you were in a designated smoking area.

I think most people will agree that the smell of tobacco smoke can be rather offensive to non smokers....even to smokers if they are trying to eat. It is my humble opinion that perhaps if all smokers had thought more about courtesy than "their right to smoke somewhere", we might not be fighting for our right to smoke in our homes, cars, backyards, cigar lounges, etc.
I've grown to be quite aware of how my smoke affects others. In an open outdoor area, I tend to be a bit less attentive, however, I try to be mindful of not smoking in an area in which people have no choice to avoid.

You are to be applauded for rising above the urge to defend against what may not have necessarily an intentional attack against smokers and being considerate of fellow diners who may have already compromised themselves to share the company of someone who smokes. I know that may be an assumption on my part, but had it been an otherwise motivated request, your after dinner smoke would have been an issue to them also.

I hope that makes sense.....

I would agree with you except on one point. They were seated on the patio while the cigars were being smoked. At that point, if they found the smell of cigar smoke so offensive, they should have asked to be seated somewhere else.

I am all about being considerate, especially as a cigar smoker...I hold this in the same regard if someone came and sat next to me at the park while I was smoking, and then started complaining about the smell...

Now I will say you catch more flies with honey than vinegar, so I would start out as nice as possible....thus my previous post.

It is a tough one, but I would have been very shocked too! "Maam, this is a smoking area." would have been my only reply. If she pushed the issue, I would have told her to get the manager. As I dont speak Spanish, however, I would have fired back "Im sorry, I dont speak nor write Spanish" in Maltese. That would be a cack!

I'm the kind of person that will try to smoke in a place that won't offend people but if I do I like to educate the person a little about my cigar before I make a choice on weather or not to put it out. That's why I'll tell them about how many people it takes from seed to me to make a cigar. Hopefully they come away with A new understanding of the leaf. These aren't some Marboro. These are created by hand for people with a passion for the leaf. BIG difference between and addiction and a passion. IMNSHO.

I have run into this more and more often. I gets me how when sitting outside someone will say to put out a smoke. Like the time I was in Baghdad where this State Dept girl said the smoke bothered her. I told her if the smell of burning garbage day and night and other distractions didn't bother her a little cigar smoke damn sure wouldn't kill her.
