Spilled Jar of Gel
Let me start this by relaying that I am an idiot!
I bought my brother-in-law a humidor for Christmas. I had to travel with it. I had forgot to put the lid back onto a small jar of that gel stuff. Well, the humidor got tilted over in the car, and the black lid with holes popped off, and the gel went all over the humidor. The wood is fine, but there are stains where each part of the gel was laying in it. I am curious, will any of the chemicals from the gel (prop. glycol, correct?) hurt the humidor? Will it ever hurt the cigars in the humidor? What can I do to best clean it up? I was thinking about wiping it out again, with a damp cloth. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks... |

This happened to me when I shipped my humidor to myself in Turkey. I had two jars of gel in there for humidification and both of them opened up in transit. The little tiny stains have not damaged the inside of my humidor one bit. I even had little dried bead crystals stuck to a couple uncelloed cigars and it didn't affect them at all. Everything will be find and if you keep the humidor full you won't even see the tiny stains. At this point it's been over a year since this happened and I don't even know if the stains are still there.

The gel I have seen with the black lid with holes was blue, so I'm sure you have blue stains all over the place. I don't think it would effect the humidor, wouldn't cause any problems. But the sight is a different story, I understand you don't want it looking like that. I would take a very fine (finishing) sand paper to it and see if the stains are not to deep. If they are not then that should work just fine. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure that it won't hurt anything.

Oh yeah I'll add that my gel was not blue. That may be a whole other story appearance wise.

I wouldn't put cigars where the stain is. But, in time, it should disappear.
The gel maintains humidity, soaks up moisture and releases it. So, re-season your humidor, keep that little section open/cleared of cigars. In a year or so, that stain should disappear. Where do you think the gel in the bottle goes when you use it up? It just disappears. Just sucks that you won't be able to utilize that space with ciggies. Andrew |
