Nicaragua / Honduras / Dominican Republic / Jamaica
After about two months of smoking I started realizing that I prefer Nicaraguan tobacco over the other two (Honduras second best). I understand the Jalapa region is suppose to be prime for tobacco growing in Nicaragua and very similar to Cuba climate.
What about you? So far here is what I like and what I didn't like. Like - Padron - Nicaragua Perdomo - Nicaragua Omar Ortez - Nicaragua Cohiba - Cuba Don Diego - Nicaragua Tatuaje - Nicaragua Oliva G - Nicaragua Sancho Panza - Honduras What I didn't care for Don Tomas - Dominican Republic Zino - Dominican Republic Royal - Jamaica Still have in my humidor ready to try Torano Casa torano - Honduras - Nicaragua filler Ilusionne - ? Don't Know Rocky Patel - ? Don't know Cao - Brazilia - Criollo and Gold - Nicaragua Liga Privada - ? Don't know Black Pearl - ? Don't know. Paticulares Reserva Privada - ? Don't know Just wondering if I'm the only one. ![]() |

I tend to lean omre towards the Nicaraguan tobacco myself right now, some many good cigars coming from there. I think it has a very rich tobacco taste unlike any of the others. But that doesn't mean I don't care for the rest. I also love the VSG which has a Dominican filler and binder, I love Litto Gomez's cigars which are Dominican also. Most of AF's are Dominican filler and binder, so the Dominican is still a very big player in the cigar world. I want to see a cigar with Dominican filler and binder with a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper! Thats what I want.

Re: Nicaragua / Honduras / Dominican Republic / Jamaica
I completely agree with you about the Nicaraguan tobacco - it is the superior taste for me. I find it more robust, more leathery, more satisfying. As TX said there are, of course, many good cigars that make use of other tobaccos. However, I find almost any cigar that uses dominican tobacco to eventually develop a rotten dairy and vegetal taste. It does not coat well and just feels like smoking rotten air often. This is just my opinion, but I find cuban or nicaraguan tobacco so much more complex and indicative of what a cigar should be. Honduran can be good also, I just really find dominican so off-putting it should be called something other than tobacco. Dominican tobacco reminds me of what smoking the udder of a 14 day old dead cow that has been rotting in a humid south american barn filled with rotten hay and millions od decomposing fruit flies. But, I don'r have a very strong opinion about it really

Re: Nicaragua / Honduras / Dominican Republic / Jamaica
I enjoy both Nicaragua and DR cigars. The ones from Nicaragua just seem to be a little stronger with more flavor.
I've gotta say that I haven't had a bad Padron or AF cigar yet. |

Wow very descriptive, yet highly detailed and documented. I have noticed the same about cigar manuf.s are choosing Nica. tobacco over the usual D.R. and Hondurian tobacco for thier cigars. I find that Nica. cigars were not seen as being that good , but now they have perfected it and are in the spotlight, as they should be. Dont get me wrong the DR and Honduras still make a fine good cigar, you just need to know where to look depending on your tastes. Tino - dont give up on the DR and Hondr. cigars --beacuse there are a lot of good smokes that have been coming out of there for years , as TX tuff mentioned a few . |

Re: Nicaragua / Honduras / Dominican Republic / Jamaica
I will caveat my slightly luke warm description of DR tobacco as rotting in a central american barn with dead flies with the fact that I do like and can fully appreciate an AF hemingway, Ashton aged maduro, and even the over discussed opus. Also like Pinar Del Rio very much.

Re: Nicaragua / Honduras / Dominican Republic / Jamaica
I find that I like Hondr cigars the most... with mixed Hondr and Nic tobacco next. While I love the flavor of the Nic, that dryness (or a twang) you get in the back of your mouth is not my favorite. Tend to drink a lot more w/ those.

I smoke 95% Nicaraguan. The DR products lack the strength and depth of body, and most taste grassy or haylike to me.

Re: Nicaragua / Honduras / Dominican Republic / Jamaica
Interesting topic. While there are great sticks from every area, I find as well that I seem to gravitate toward brands that use Nicaraguan tobacco, with Honduras not far behind.

Re: Nicaragua / Honduras / Dominican Republic / Jamaica
Dominican Haters, DON'T just pass over these in the shops. Like you, i'm primarily a Nicuraguan fan. IMO, 9/10 times any Nic is better than whatever Dominican i'm smoking. HOWEVER.. the premium Dominican sticks are some of, if not THE best non-CC sticks available. Yes, most DR sticks are bland and tasteless. But when you find one that's 'on', something that has some of the best qualities of a CC but different, a stick that kicks your ass up and down, it will make you wonder why you waste your time on Nicuraguans.
Then you see how much a good DR costs and buy a nice Nic bundle.
