SCHIP Tax and Effects on Smoking

I'm hoping we all agree to suffer equally - right now it looks like $0.40 per stick on cigars - if the manufacturer, distributor and retail shop each take $0.10 hit I have no problem paying another dime.
Let's face it - the consumer isn't the one at risk here - the manufacturer, distributor and retail shop run the risk. While they might usually pass these cost increases along to the consumer the sales loss would likely be too great. Make less or make even less...not much of a choice in these economic stimulus times.

Your logic is flawed unfortunately.

Hate to be mean but your completly wrong. Please go read the blog done by Leaf and Ale and you will see what the tax will be. Also more tax is never good and taxing business is the worst policy to try to increase revenue for a government, it never works.

Re: SCHIP Tax and Effects on Smoking

I just came back from seeing my B&M store owner and he told me that it was going to be .40 a stick. He told me that what was going to be taxed heavily was the "loose tobacco" for pipes and rolling your own ciggs. He did mention that if you buy your cigars from a "Cigar Bar", they'll probably raise the prices through the roof. I doubt he is going to be wrong... he's had his store open for about 35yrs.

RYO Cigarette Tobacco is currently taxed at $1/lb. The new tax is $24/lb... expect a $35/lb increase!

Isn't it ironic that with the SCHIP tax that it will be cheaper to buy a box of Cubans illegaly than it will be to buy a box of a lot of the higher ends legaly?!?!?!!?

Exactly. Right now I am about 80/20 NCs. That could reverse itself in the near future. The Dems should be promoting smoking. We are going to need a lot more smokers over the next few years to fund this. Smoke one for the kids.

Don't worry about that. Obama will lift the embargo and tax the crap out of those too.

Re: SCHIP Tax and Effects on Smoking

Why can't they fund schip with some of that trillion dollar spending spree the dems just passed?

Tax tobacco, kill sales, and there will be no money left to pay for healthcare part of the bill. Where is the change we were promised? Could I at least get a kiss and some vaseline?

Yep. And then they'll just tax us more when they become perplexed over why the tobacco tax revenues are down. The problem is no one (the citizens) does anything about this--as sheep, we just let them walk all over us.
