Sigh. I ruined a PAM 1964 today...

I've never scoffed at the importance of proper lighting
techniques, but it was super-windy, my Blazer was on
the fritz, and I was a bit rushed overall. The result was
a charred, bitter stogie unlike any PAM I've ever smoked.
Yechh!

I've rush-lit cigars before, but I've never seen the flavor
turn bad to such a degree as with a premium stick like
this. I'll certainly never make this mistake again!

Fortunately, the second PAM 1964 I had immediately
afterwards was an absolute pleasure.

Now, where did I put those King B's?

I can't tell the difference no matter how I light'em. Wooden matches or butane. What is "rush lighting" anyhow?

Re: Sigh. I ruined a PAM 1964 today...

Rush-lit is putting the cigar in your mouth, jamming a
Blazer's flame directly against the foot, and puffing until
a huge flame appears.

I've lit some PAMs pretty fast before and never harmed
the taste much. They were a tad bitter for a puff or two
then cleared up. But I'm here to tell you that it is quite
possible to ruin any cigar this way.

Especially with premiums like PAMs, I normally toast
the foot with indirect flame for a minute or two until the
entire foot is lit evenly. I love the roasted-nut scent it
creates and the anticipation.

I feel your pain as I learned this lesson as well. A proper lighting not only saves you a good smoke but saves money as well.

Ah, yes...I've seen the wall of flame. PAM's are too good for that treatment. Sorry for your loss!!

Ashame, but we learn from our mistakes. I for one would reserve a PAM64 only at prime smoking conditions, indoors or a nice sunny day with no wind.

Glad the 2nd one turned out great for you!

Re: Sigh. I ruined a PAM 1964 today...

sometimes when you do that a quick purge right away can sometimes salvage the taste but its not a fix for it every time. I always carry a torch lighter just in case and i normally purge after a light especially after a relight. Even if it is a psychosomatic thing it makes it smoother to me. LOL Some people don't believe in the purge but i do firmly and i suggest you always do with a relight. Although this is a bit off topic and i bet a purge wouldn't have fixed that smoke did you try? I never use a soft flame for my cigars just for that reason although they make a nice light indoors i still use a torch. Although i have never been a fan of double or triple torches I just dont think its needed maybe if you smoke 60+ gauge cigars LOL but i prefer 50 at the max. I am not really into the new 50-60 gauge sizes. although i can deal with up to a 54 if its a GOOD smoke (La Gloria Serie R is the only thing i can think of that fits into that category) Sorry for all the off topic LOL
