Connecticut Broadleaf machine mades
Do any of you smoke CT broadleaf machine made cigars?
Three brands that are still in existence (all over 100 year old companies) are Muniemaker, Topper & Evermore. These are the cigars I started with back in mid eighties. They were very popular here in CT. They are decent cheap smokes. The only places that sold cigars back then, unless you were lucky enough to have a cigar store in your town, were convenience stores (FKA: newsstands) & drug stores. They would have a small glass top humidor with a few premiums such as Te Amo, Bering, Punch, Partagas, Macanudo & Canaria de Oro. The machine mades were primarily sold in 5 packs on an adjacent rack, unhumidified. The mid eighties were a very bad time for the industry in the US. Health conscious baby boomers largely shunned cigars & the image of the typical cigar smoker was one of an older, overwight, slovenly, & unhealthy relic from an earlier, unenlightened time. That all changed in the nineties when cigars came into vogue during the “boom years”. |

Re: Connecticut Broadleaf machine mades
Right after I graduated high school in the early 70's an older friend and I tried to learn to play golf(never did get it) and we would always buy some Muniemakers for the "links". We lived in Waterbury. A few years back I was visiting my sister there and I picked up some Muniemakers just for fun and I enjoyed them. There also was a gnarly looking cigar at the time of my school days called "guinea stinkers" that was the slang, but I never knew the brand name. I tried one once as a kid and they were strong for my taste. Toppers are OK.
That was a long time ago. Maybe I should order a box of Muniemakers just for old times sake. |
