The quest for Nirvana (working title)

I've only been smoking cigars for a few months, thus, I haven't tried all that many brands, really. So when I get a large (for me) order from Atlantic cigar today ( see here: http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/481/dsc0010sl2.jpg ), I'm quick to explore all that which has become my new... distraction. Of course I pick up the most attractive stick first. A Rocky Patel Old World Reserve (only to explore, nothing else). I proceed to remove it from the cello, but seeing how tight the little fat b@stard was I only took it out 1/3rd the way (never get the fat b@stard back in, otherwise). On a whim I put the foot to my nose and inhale.... HOOOLY SH|T! - wait, bad choice of word. Holy Heavenly sinful bliss this cigar smelled gooood. Milk chocolate, vanilla and dare I say butterscotch ? - whatever it was, it was a promise of something quite delectable... A sloth-like frenzy, I start pulling cigars from wrappers like mad, sniffing them like a dog at a tasty crotch - that would be the dog's words, of course - Most of them smelled, eh ok. None compared to the saucy, I-know-you-want-me-big-boy, ultra organic tease that the RP-OWR is. A definite special occasion cigar. Such as, oh I dunno.. 5 minutes from now sounds like a special enough occasion. Oh I didn't tell you the best part. The RP Super sampler it came with included...(theatrical pause)... TWO! - have mercy.

For those that just have to know everything.... the RP Decade and Gran Habano #5 smelled second best. Partagas Black (like sour liquor - sherry), and Spanish Galleon (sea sponge with a hint of caviar - ok I just made that up, but it helps clear the dog + crotch thing, don't it ?) coming in last spot. The others being "Mmm not bad" to "bleh".

So with all that said and done. What cigar blew your mind (exploding cigars don't count) the first time you nasal appraised it ?

Great post!

A couple 'special sniffers' for me:

A pre-embargo Habano that I just got today in a suprise pack from a buddy.

Also, the first time I nose-wrangled a Camacho Triple Maduro.

I actually had a cigar while visiting Austin this weekend that smelled DELICIOUS and it was a house brand at Bobalu Cigar Co. on 6th street. It was freshly rolled and unlabeled, had a light-colored wrapper but I don't know which one it actually was..... Custom Label Cigars - Bobalu Cigar Co.- Live Cigar Rollers

The other cigars had bands but this one did not and it smelled sweet and AMAZING. I couldn't stop sniffing it, even while smoking.

Re: The quest for Nirvana (working title)

I think it was this one: fresh rolled - vintage cigar - connecticut shade - dominican cigar - cigar roller

Bobalu's Texas Select Cigars

All Texas Select cigars are rolled fresh by our most experienced Cuban rollers. We use only finest aged Dominican filler, a beautiful Sumatran wrapper and triple cap them to perfection. Fresh! right off the rollers table is the way most of the most famous cigar men smoke them. If you have never tried a fresh cigar you do not know what you are missing! Although these cigars are packed fresh with no aging after being rolled, all tobacco used is aged for a minimum of three (3) years. This unique and extremely mild taste is reminiscent of the cigars bought home to smoke by the maestro torcedors of old Havana. See what difference freshness makes! Watch "Live" http://www.livecigarrollers.com/rollercam.php
Wrapper Sumatran Natural
Binder Ecuador
Filler Dominican

Not guilty, never been to Santa Monica. Funny story, though.

Re: The quest for Nirvana (working title)

I can only imagine the smell of a freshly rolled cigar compared to a B&M or internet version being a much richer, more dynamic smell ?? ....almost sound like a commercial.

" Pick up a Padilla Miami or 1932 and smell that baby, it makes my mouth water everytime!! "

My curiosity has piqued. Care to elaborate on it's aromatic qualities ?

Re: The quest for Nirvana (working title)

Having worked in a B&M I can say that I dearly wanted to put up a sign on the humidor door reading "Keep your nose out of my cigars and I'll keep my foot out of your ass!" The owners wouldn't let me. Yes there's a lot of nice smells related to cigars, but I'd like to think that every single stick in the B&M doesn't have Joe Shmo's snot on it... It was a real pain to find ten or fifteen cigars a day with the cello ripped apart. Oh wait! I should have typed "I don't mean to be an ass but" at the beginning of my little mini-rant... < G >

Re: The quest for Nirvana (working title)

I like to smell my cigars too. I can't say that I really have a favorite, I love them all equally. The best part of going to my B&M is the smell upon first walking into the humidor. Like The Squid® advises, I stay away from jamming them into my nose until I get home.
