Gurkha sherpa

I'll be the 1st to admit the Sherpa is only a decent $2 cigar but it is a niche cigar for me. I have to smoke outside and it has been pretty cold this winter - the Sherpa though only decent is a well-made, fairly tasty cigar that has enough flavor to still be enjoyable when the temperature goes down into the 30's and lower. It makes a good cold weather cigar with enough taste to still be enjoyable when the temperature drops but I don't feel like I'm wasting a "good" cigar plus it holds up well in the cold weather. Probably won't be smoking them when the weather warms up but for now they fill a niche that I need filled.

Re: Gurkha sherpa

For an inexpensive cigar I found them to be quite enjoyable. I picked up quite a few fivers from the devil site not too long ago. I am letting them sit and will revisit them soon.

I like them. I taste a lot of dried fruit flavors. Much more flavor than I expected from such a a light color wrapper.

Gotta agree with Penguinva. I have a few pretty decent sticks, but I also don't want to "waste them" in the WI tundra. This wasn't a fave of mine, but things like the Rocky Patel R4, Tonuco and to a lesser extent LGC Wavell are smokes that you can sort of hurry through outside and feed the smoking Jones. JMHO

I smoked one early last year, and it just tasted like grass... It really turned me off. But, hey, different strokes..

Re: Gurkha sherpa

When I smoked one in warmer weather I found it just okay and did notice some grassy elements, but when the temp drops into the mid-30's and the wind is blowing you are not going to be tasting a lot anyway. In those conditions it is more important to not have the cigar fall apart - case in point was Punch Gran Puro just finished; when went out it was in mid 40's and cigar was great, but a front moved in, temp dropped and wind picked up - by last 3rd had lost most of taste and the wrapper fell apart. Other cigars will also fill the bill but a lot of cigars won't hold up in the cold windy weather.

I was looking at these on Cbid, but I think I'll buy something else. Thanks for the info.

Interesting spin on what makes a cigar good. Holds up well in cold weather, not something usually mentioned in reviews.

I know I've had a few of these because I have the bands, but I can't remember whether I liked them or not...

Nice post Penguinva!

Got me thinking about an Avo I smoked at a poker game about a month ago. We played in a guys garage and it was about 26 degrees that evening. That stick (#3 churchill) bored me to tears!

No flavors... and it didn't even give me that "creamy" Avo experience that I remembered Avo's having years ago. I know they are mild, but I thought that after 2 hours in I would get Sommmething... Maybe it was temperature related? I was thinking that I would need to age the gars and then try again for the creamy sensation at least. I will try another one soon, in my warm office eventually paired with armagnac and report back.

Any experience to share?

Since then I have been taking Partagas gars and I have been playing much better! Actually won our tournament last time we played 2 weeks ago.

Tonight is COLD Poker Night again. Anybody want to suggest a gar to go with some Pacifico beer?

And..... I'm out.

Cold & very dry weather can play can play havoc with many cigars - 2 other gars that I have had very good luck with in cold dry weather are the 5 Vegas "A" and the CAO "VR" - both have thick maduro wrappers that hold up well, plus they both are great tasting, with rich full flavor - if you like good maduros these are not too bad. Just thought of a couple others, the Padilla Obsidian and the RP Fusion Double Maduro - again rich tasting maduros.

Hey thanks a lot Virginia Penguin! I have some RP Double Maduros on order so I will be able to try them at the next game. That Padilla Obdidian sounds very interesting. I am going to go get one for tonights game.

I just remembered that in early Dec. last year on a rather cold night, 5 out of 5 wrappers popped/split for 5 different guys. We were all flumexed

Now we know why.

Here, let me add to your ring gauge to express my appreciation,

You know I suggeste that theory once as I was smoking in old weather...I think people were laughing at me for saying it.

Anyhow, Padilla Obsidian is delicious.
