If I ran a B&M that had a bunch of goons coming in and opening and closing the humidor hundreds of times a day, I would probably compensate for the loss by upping the humidity, too.

Just a thought...

To 85 though? That's ridiculous, even if the door was removed.

I hear you, good thing I'm not that close to some of the B&Ms in Houston. We have some great ones!

Devils advocate here the hygrometer could have been off and even though it read 85 it could have been off by ten or fifteen and they knew it and were just subtracting in their head some are just that bad and because you didnt ask you coudlnt have known

Re: Local B&M Humi at 82% humidity

Is this a new trend? Seems like many online sellers are shipping the cigars a bit wet...so that means they are stored at a higher humidity. And what about the cigars from Cuba? One would assume they spend most of their existence at a higher humidity as well...at least that is until they make it to their destination...

Re: Local B&M Humi at 82% humidity

My local keeps its humi too high as well. When I purchase from them, I have to let them sit a while before smoking, otherwise I get burn problems. I think stores must keep higher rh in order to compensate for people entering and exiting the walk-in.

Re: Local B&M Humi at 82% humidity

I went up to Maine this weekend and stopped in this decent sized b&m that claimed it had " The largest walk-in humidor in Maine" and as soon as I walked in the humidor it smelled like an indoor pool, the tile was soaking wet and reeked of chlorine . There wasn't a hygrometer to be found as I looked to see what the rh was, I felt a few cigars and all of them were very wet/spongy feeling. So that's when I left.

Re: Local B&M Humi at 82% humidity

Nothing worse. One of my buddies went into a shop like that the other day and he told the owner that they needed to lower their humidity. They actually told him that it was supposed to be at 85%. Utterly ridiculous.

Re: Local B&M Humi at 82% humidity

The local B&M here has a bad humidity problem. I have only bought a few sticks there before because of the prices in Canada but it's kind of nice to see a stick, buy it and have it in your hands there and then. The last two times I went in the gauges have read 80-85%. At first I thought they must be wrong but taking a look through the windows of the humidors virtually the entire selection, which is several large cabinets and a few thousand cigars, were all splitting and cracking. I had a small humi get to 85% once while I was on vacation and lost a few good cigars (Cubans nontheless). So what I saw at the B&M nearly sent shivers down my spine. Thankfully I didn't see any mould but it can't be too far off. Sad really.....the B&M is only a block away with no other real competition in town.

Re: Local B&M Humi at 82% humidity

I had a similar experience about six months ago. I wrote about it on CigarLive. The funny thing is the owner of the B&M told me the mold meant he was properly humidifying the walk-in. Can you believe it? He actually tried to convince me the mold was good thing. In fact, those were his exact words.

BTW: The B&M was Aficionados in Lake Forest, CA.

I would have grab one of the moldiest sticks I could find, hand it to him, and tell him to fire it up.
